[Bug 726896] New: x server (kdm) does not start after upgrade to RC1 on Acer aspire One 522
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726896 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726896#c0 Summary: x server (kdm) does not start after upgrade to RC1 on Acer aspire One 522 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dutchkind@txoriaskea.org QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0 On the Acer aspire One 522 with AMD C50 processor and ATI video card, in beta1 I could start with nomodeset in grub, but after upgrading to RC1 X will not start anymore. I can login as root and then run startx, and the graphical system with KDE then starts and runs without any problem, but for normal users I have not been able to start a graphical session. As a side note, I discovered that a boot in Beta1 would hang with the graphical splash screen enabled, no boot splash screen in grub started the system OK, in combination of nomodeset Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I noticed it takes rather long before the graphical login starts, the first times I thought it didn't start, then I discovered this, so I wait a while. When it worked, before, I didn't have to wait that long, now I wait and nothing happens. I will try and send a dmesg output. On my own laptop with intel graphics, after a fresh install, I cannot get x to start either. Whatever I try, nomodeset, intellegacy, nothing. Well, actually, it does start, but when I wait a while before entering password, it leaves the graphical shell and returns to console with a no responding system. Or when I login quicker, it starts the KDE session but just at the moment I see my desktop the same thing happens. Did another test since I have a problem with the encrypted /tmp on the intel laptop, seems that was the cause, because now it starts without a problem. /tmp failed to mount, and obviously without tmp x cannot start. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In the end I removed systemd and now the system starts as expected, graphical login appears, still one thing not working but that is not in the scope of this bug. It seems this bug was entirely related to systemd which doesn't seem ready for prime time yet. I have even started considering returning to windows.
