[Bug 402761] New: .ICEauthority access rights (again)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=402761 Summary: .ICEauthority access rights (again) Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Factory Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: martin.hildebrandt@laterne.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Martin Hildebrandt <martin.hildebrandt@laterne.de> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flag| |CCB_Review? I started nautilus with su from a command line while being logged in as "martin". The I watched stored videos (from a directory that´s not accessible to "martin"). Everything worked fine ... til I tried to switch on the PC the next day. Gnome wouldn´t work anymore. Neither KDE. The reason that I found and solved through the textconsole: I had achieved an /home/martin/.ICEauthority directory with root as the owner! Easy enough to solve. Martin, I tried to reproduce this bug but didn't succeed. Did you do exactly this? 1. su (not "su -") 2. nautilus 3. double-click on videos so Totem is launched Or was it something different? Also, did gnome-session warn you that your .ICEauthority had the wrong owner (it should!), or did you figure this out in another way? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did you do exactly this?
1. su (not "su -")
Yup
2. nautilus
Yo
3. double-click on videos so Totem is launched
Yes
Or was it something different?
It was exactly this. Additional info: It was a newly installed Suse 11.0 on my own private MP3 (and video) jukebox PC and there where no videos ever played before. (I think Nautilus was started before.)
Also, did gnome-session warn you that your .ICEauthority had the wrong owner (it should!), or did you figure this out in another way?
Hard to say. It´s running at home on a Toshiba LCD-TV and after installing Nvidia-drivers the font in the error screen (and KDM) has gotten so small that you really can´t read it. (Did my own debugging session today: Toshiba reports wrong screen size through EDID.) As I said: This is supposed to be my personal MultimediaPC. It was running under Suse 10.3 (and doing fine) and got an additional TB-disc a week ago. That was when I decided to update it to Suse 11. The videos on the old hard disc (that I mounted under /mnt/o2) where not accesible to the new user and so I used su to get access. IAC: Great to see that you´re taking it seriously! Contact me any time! Regards -MHi -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After doing each step, or after viewing each video, could you check the owner of .ICEauthority by hand to see which step causes the owner to change? At the moment I can´t reproduce it either. Might be related to the calling directly after fresh installation. (Yes, all patches were applied first.) I think I´ll make a cronjob that informs me. The cronjob helped tremendously. In fact it looks as if nautilus is not the guilty party, but kinternet, that I started after su. This is related to _another_ bug: Networkmanager that I´m normally using with Gnome doesn´t always show the modem that I´m using (which is a USB-connected Nokia N95 UMTS phone) for dialing. And I don´t always want to use ifup So I started kinternet, which seems to work fine. But now I found out, that it changes ownership of .ICEauthority from martins:users to root:root. I hope that´ll solve it.:) Have a nice weekend! The program smb4k systematically cause the problem. You can run it as a user and activate the sudo support in the options or run the program with kdesu. If you are under GNOME, as soon as you mount a windows share or run the program with kdesu, the file .ICEauthority is assigned to root.root. If you are under KDE, the file .ICEauthority retain its permissions. It would then seem the problem is specifically associated with KDE3 applications under GNOME. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
