[Bug 555603] New: [Mesa/Intel G43/45 chipset] Direct Rendering Disabled upon install
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=555603 Summary: [Mesa/Intel G43/45 chipset] Direct Rendering Disabled upon install Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: trust.no.1.xf@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- --- Comment #0 from j h <trust.no.1.xf@gmail.com> 2009-11-15 06:24:38 UTC --- Created an attachment (id=327574) xorg log User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux; en-US) AppleWebKit/527+ (KHTML, like Gecko, Safari/419.3) rekonq Direct Rendering is disabled with Intel G43/45 chipset upon install. The seemingly relevant clue is in the xorg log: (EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to detect GEM. Kernel 2.6.28 required. (EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master. Reproducible: Always Actual Results: Things crawl because of hardware acceleration/direct rendering not being enabled. Expected Results: Direct Rendering to be enabled and thus desktop effects (KDE) enabled. I discussed this on both the OpenSUSE & intel-gfx IRC channels. In the intel-gfx channel the cause of the issue could not be determined. I was however told that the issue is most likely due to Mesa and to file a bug here against Mesa. All of the relevant packages are unmodified from the 11.2 install, but for reference they are: kernel-desktop-2.6.31.5-0.1.1.x86_64 Mesa-7.6-3.1.x86_64 xorg-x11-7.4-35.3.x86_64 xorg-x11-server-7.4-61.63.1.x86_64 intel driver 2.9.1 I think the relevant error in the Xorg.0.log is this one: (EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to detect GEM. Kernel 2.6.28 required. (EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master. This doesn't seem to make sense because as listed above, 11.2 ships with 2.6.31+ so GEM should not be an issue. Also, I don't know if this is relevant but 11.2 did correctly detect my monitor (connected via DVI) and all settings regarding it are correct. Apparently 11.2 no longer utilizes the xorg.conf file. Before installing 11.2, I backed up my xorg.conf file. Upon encountering this problem with 11.2 I copied my working xorg.conf from 11.1 to /etc/X11/ to see if that would help, but it was apparently ignored as it did not make a difference. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could this be the same issue as in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/4725...
In the process of research this I came across that "bug". It was filed against an older version of the Intel driver iirc and was fixed a while back. However, I did check my BIOS settings and PAVP was already disabled. So in other words, no, this is not the same issue. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hmm. Only slightly older driver (2.9.0 instead of 2.9.1), similar for xserver (1.6.4 instead of 1.6.5). The same kernel version, both have 2.6.31. So this would have been a reasonable explanation. I no longer have one - for now. :-( -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Nothing. It's just an assumption, which needs to be verified first.

I tested 11.2 a while back and it would crash the xserver because they weren't packaing the proper intel driver version with the proper kernel version and/or the proper xserver version so testing 11.2 was not practical. Now upon final release I find the problem is just as bad, but in a different way. (At least I can use the OS without hardware acceleration). I thought UXA was the new default that is recommend to be used? (At least I read that on the gentoo wiki, but maybe that information was outdated). Check this

A possible workaround:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21574#c24
Set the shared memory size to 128MB in BIOS. Does this fix the issue?
That did the trick! It worked. I can confirm that direct rendering/hardware acceleration is enabled. My motherboard has AMIBIOS 1.00 (1.70 is apparently the latest version). The setting was set to Auto so I changed it to 128MB and it worked. It is still detected as 256MB according to dmesg. Will changing this setting to 128MB from Auto (256MB) affect my performance? I hope not, but if it will, I hope a real solution to this can be worked on so those of us effected aren't forced with a trade off of reasonable functioning for sacrificed performance.
