[Bug 919687] New: cron does not send mail upon abnormal exit of script anymore
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=919687 Bug ID: 919687 Summary: cron does not send mail upon abnormal exit of script anymore Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: devel@fresse.org QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- How to reproduce: 1. Put in crontab: * * * * * false 2. Wait No mail is ever sent. It is very unclear from crontab(5) under which circumstances a mail is sent. Past versions (openSuSE 11.4) *did* send mail for aborted or abnormally terminated scripts. The change in behaviour is, to the best of my knowledge, nowhere documented. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

How to reproduce:
1. Put in crontab:
* * * * * false
2. Wait
No mail is ever sent. It is very unclear from crontab(5) under which circumstances a mail is sent.
Cron will, to my knowledge, send an email when output is produced. The return code from whatever was executed is irrelevant. Try adding this to your crontab: * * * * * echo blurp -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm particularly annoyed about the line in crontab(5):
In addition to LOGNAME, HOME, and SHELL, cron(8) looks at the MAILTO variable if a mail needs to be send as a result of running any commands in that particular crontab.
In cron(8) you can find: "When executing commands, any output is mailed to the owner of the crontab" I agree that this isn't documented very well. However, this bug should rather be reported upstream at: https://fedorahosted.org/cronie/ -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
