[Bug 847225] New: yast2-printer: run "hp-setup network.printer.IP.address" for some HP network printers
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=847225 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=847225#c0 Summary: yast2-printer: run "hp-setup network.printer.IP.address" for some HP network printers Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.1 Beta 1 Platform: All OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEEDINFO Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: jsmeix@suse.com ReportedBy: jsmeix@suse.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com CC: ms@suse.com InfoProvider: ms@suse.com Found By: Development Blocker: No Marcus Schaefer reported the following to me via personal mail (in German): --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ich habe einen HP LaserJet 200 colorMFP M276 und wollte den mit hp-setup einrichten. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Short translation: To set up some HP network printers, one must run "hp-setup network.printer.IP.address" otherwise hp-setup cannot autodetect the device. First hp-setup downloads a required plugin from HP otherwise the printer/scanner cannot work. Accordingly yast2-printer should have an option to run "hp-setup network.printer.IP.address" which means yast2-printer should first get the IP in such cases. Remark: For me it worked to set up HP network printers by calling plain "hp-setup" (without printer's IP). Perhaps it depends on whether or not the printer requires a plugin to be downloaded from HP and installed. Marcus, to find out whether or not it depends on the plugin, run now plain "hp-setup" (without IP) and report if now it can autodetect your printer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I.e. was your printer shown in the upper selection box at "Specify the connection"? If non did you click the [Detect more] button and was your printer then shown or not? What I like to find out is whether or not the cups backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp can detect your printer even when no plugin was installed. If /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp can detect your printer even without plugin, I think I could implement an automatism to run "hp-setup network.printer.IP.address" in such cases. If /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp cannot detect your printer without plugin, then I think I would need to implement an additional user dialog before launching hp-setup where the user could manually enter the printer's IP address. FYI: How to find files that are installed as plugin from HP: # find /usr/share/hplip/ \ | xargs -n1 rpm -qf \ | grep 'not owned by any package' \ | grep -v '\.pyc' If you like you may remove those files and then test if /usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp can detect your printer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
