The situation is much more complex than I realised! My interpretation of that document is that one day you will have to bite the bullet and fix any scripts that require Python2 without specifying it. But I quite understand why you want to put off that unpleasant task. The solution for me is very simple: I have just put alias python='python3' in my $HOME/.alias file.
