[Bug 631291] New: eSATA device causes ata errors until link downgrades to 1.5Gbps
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=631291 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=631291#c0 Summary: eSATA device causes ata errors until link downgrades to 1.5Gbps Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ietc@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=383011) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=383011) Output of dmesg when device is plugged in without first limiting SATA link speed User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100723 SUSE/3.6.8-0.1.1 Firefox/3.6.8 As explained in this forum post: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/hardware/444228-delay-libat... I have a Comkia MM-G3BK-SUE MobiMe G3 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA enclosure being connected to an MSI K9AGM2-L mainboard, with the AMD SB600 chipset as the AHCI SATA controller, via a Rosewill RCR-AK-IM5002 internal card reader that provides a SATA-to-eSATA adaptor. When it is it plugged in (or if it is already attached when openSUSE boots, causing it to delay process), libata spends fifteen seconds or so trying to connect with the device until it drops the link speed, from 3.0Gbps, to 1.5Gbps. The dmesg log of errors is attached. My workaround is currently to limit the link speed with the GRUB option 'libata.force=3:1.5Gbps,4:1.5Gbps' (for the two ports that are otherwise unused). However, as I don't wish to rely on this forever, I wonder if there is a real fix to be found. Unfortunately, I don't have any other hardware to test with, but there is a chance that I could want to plug this enclosure into another person's eSATA port in the future and I hope that the problem isn't with the enclosure itself. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Attach the enclosure via eSATA and power on. 2. See output of dmesg. Actual Results: Observe the output of dmesg report ATA errors until it drops the link speed to 1.5Gbps. Expected Results: The enclosure should be able to connect at 3.0Gbps, or at least it should be available almost immediately (as when the link speed is limited to 1.5Gbps). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
