https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246466 Summary: acpi=force does not work reliably Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: seife@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: trenn@novell.com OtherBugsDependingO 245732 nThis: It seems that with the current kernel, "acpi=force" only works if it is the last parameter on the kernel command line and if not even a single space (0x20) is following it. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246466 ------- Comment #3 from seife@novell.com 2007-02-18 07:59 MST ------- it is even more strange. "acpi=force init=/bin/bash noapic " results in neither acpi=force nor noapic being used. Maybe Bernhards commandline patches are buggy? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246466 ------- Comment #5 from seife@novell.com 2007-02-18 08:11 MST ------- i'm not sure about the latest comment, i am actually not sure if "noapic " works or nt, because the printk i used to determine is only present in ACPI mode :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246466 ------- Comment #6 from seife@novell.com 2007-02-18 08:40 MST ------- It is even more strange: it sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to work always if i try it on a dualprocessor "machine". Note that i am testing this on QEMU version 0.9.0 with the qemu accelerator module. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246466 ------- Comment #7 from bwalle@novell.com 2007-02-18 10:38 MST ------- The command line patches didn't change the parsing of the command line. Only the way it's stored. So if your system boots and /proc/cmdline is right, I think the problem are not the commandline patches. However, I can build a kernel image of HEAD without that patches to verify and/or take a look at that problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246466 ------- Comment #8 from bwalle@novell.com 2007-02-18 10:40 MST ------- And, Seife, would it be possible to quick-check if SP1 is affected? I just want to make absolutely sure that the patches didn't break SP1 again. :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

SLED10SP1Beta3 (2.6.16.37-0.18) fails similarly with "acpi=force init=/bin/bash".

As long as this does not happen on a normal system... I wonder how important this is and whether we should close this one as won'tfix? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It looks like a timing issue / race condition, but it could also be a plain bug in QEMU. However, since "virtualization" is the best thing since sliced bread... ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If I have some time left, I could take a look at this (but only the latest and greatest kernel, not SP1 since we don't support QEmu AFAIK). But don't expect a very quick fix ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
