[Bug 373279] New: Update trashes scpm
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=373279 Summary: Update trashes scpm Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jfunk@funktronics.ca QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- I just did 10.3 -> 11a3 and scpm failed horribly. First, scpm refused to do anything, saying that the operating system changed and referred to the an page which said nothing on the topic. On a hunch, I ran the YaST module, which said that it had to perform an update. When I said yes, it deleted all of my profiles. Now I have to recreate all of my profiles again and network setup for a dozen-or-so networks, including many bridges and vlans. At least the 10.2 -> 10.3 left one of my vlans intact. This time everything's gone. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's incredibly aggravating to have to recreate my painfully complex network configurations (a giant mess of vlans, bridges, and tap devices from OpenVPN and KVM) on every single update. If there isn't any intention of fixing this, I'm going to give up on SCPM and just write my own script that doesn't unceremoniously delete my configurations. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

System updates are quite a nightmare from scpm's point of view. After a system update, SuSEconfig.scpm should have been run, which detects a system update and tries to update the configuration data saved in the profiles. This might fail, especially in case of a rather sophisticated setup. James, since scpm refused to do anything (it does that to prevent data loss), I suspect that may have been the case. If you still got your /var/log/scpm of that date, could you attach it to this bug? Maybe it reveals something. Apart from that, I can try to reproduce it, but I cannot promise anything. And a few tips: scpm creates backups of all resources. They can be restored via the 'scpm backup' command (see 'info scpm' for documentation), the GUI front-end 'sumf' also has support for it, IIRC. After an update (not a re-initialisation), the backups should be still there. Also, for valuable configuration data, it can be a good idea to export the profiles before updating for extra backup. Even if the configuration scheme in the new system changed in an incompatible way, the old data will be accessible for manual migration in that case. Profile can be exported with the scpm's database tool, e.g. 'scpm db export profile ~/profilebaks/default default'. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

SuSEconfig.scpm was not called in the process, so auto-migration of profiles did not happen. Maybe the situation was similar with you, James? The pop-up where sumf asks whether it should re-init is quite screwed, the text is in oversized line only, so potentially cutting off the part where it tells about losing existing profiles. Also, it does not stress the imminent data loss very much. So as short term "fix", that dialog could be improved. In the long run, it would be nice to implement support in sumf for detecting an updated-system-situation and migration of the profiles. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It only asks me if I want to re-initialize it. I always end up manually backing up /var/lib/scpm, re-initializing, and recreating every one of my profiles, which is a time-consuming process. I think I might have wrote a script to do it last time, but that was a while ago :-) I have not yet attempted to install 11.1 beta on the machine with the profiles this time around. I normally do around beta2 or 3, but I run Xen on it, and that's currently broken as of beta4. That's supposed to be fixed in RC1, so I will do it at that time. If there's anything you want me to look for, please let me know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you run again into the re-init situation, you can abort sumf and try running /sbin/conf.d/SuSEconfig.scpm manually and see whether this helps. Also, the broken re-init dialog could be fixed for 11.1, so the user could actually read what he or she is confirming there (the loss of all profiles). I am not sure why the dialog box does not wrap the text (I guess it did once), but it's quite easy to fix. I'll attach a patch, maybe someone has time to add it to the package (sumf). Theoretically, I still should have commit rights to the scpm CVS, so I could fix it there as well. :) I'll check that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
