[Bug 289983] New: gv 3.5.8-1184. 2 does not honor the -fn option for use of different fonts anymore
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=289983 Summary: gv 3.5.8-1184.2 does not honor the -fn option for use of different fonts anymore Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mack@ifis.cs.tu-bs.de QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: Customer The fonts used in gv menues etc. can no longer be set via the -fn option, e.g.: gv -fn '-*-lucida-bold-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1' should result in noticeable difference to gv -fn '-*-lucida-bold-r-*-*-*-180-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1' in the appearance of gv. This worked without problems with gv-3.5.8-961 of SuSE-9.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

GV uses XtOpenDisplay(3) and therefore uses XOpenDisplay(3) and afterwards XtDisplayInitialize(3). The last function uses XrmParseCommand(3) to parse all arguments, perform and remove all known arguments of the libXt from the list. The options defined by the GV sources will be expanded afterwards also within XrmParseCommand(3) with the rest arguments list. To be noted even without the I18N patch the libXt accepts the option -fn or -font but does not do anything about the specified font. IMHO there was a changed within libXt. Beside this the option -xrm 'GV*font: ...' is also parsed but ignored. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And Linux is giving up its Unix roots in the same way. Is it a matter of (Open-)SUSE only or is this a problem in Linux generally? I mean: can I switch to another current Linux not having these and many other problems? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On major advantage of Linux is ... or should I say was ... that the users try to fix the problem by their own and report the fix upstream. This was the way I got involved into Linux and Open Source ;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm involved in Open Source projects, I'm involved in reporting bugs, and everything takes quite some time from other work. I found enough bugs in OpenSUSE for now, I did not even find the time to report all of them, which costs quite some time normally, if I take it seriously. But if I see others don't find the time to fix the bugs, I don't get motivated to report them. I can't work on tracing bugs and fixing bugs both in so many different parts, where I do not even have the idea of which package they are from. Removing working toolkit options from libXt is even more 'major' to me as are the missing man pages from all kde programs right from the start of the KDE project or not being able to run twm and kde alternatively. No, I did never report on the missing man pages: I can neither write all of them, nor do I see a chance to convince people not even seeing the necessity to deliver man pages right from the start of the project. So, if there are not enough resources to uphold the Unix-basics in Linux, then I cannot resolve the problem. I would like to stick to Unix-like systems, so if there are other distributions beyond (Open-)SUSE that keep the Unix-basics more up then (Open-)SUSE, they will be an alternative. It's a design decision of SUSE what they emphasize more and what less. And I do see the point, why it is said to be a 'minor' problem. But I do have different preferences. SUSE does at least not have the preference to deliver a major bug free system. The preference is in 'innovation' or something like this, which IS a good thing also. And the preferences are for a nice window-ish single user desktop etc., which is ALSO a good thing. And which I can enjoy as well. But we can currently hardly abandon major Unix basics here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So it will be on other distributions as well which have recent versions of Xorg. We try to fix as many problems as we can, but our resources are limited. Hopefully somebody will find the time to fix it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
