[Bug 658518] New: rpmdb corruption during installation of packages
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=658518 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=658518#c0 Summary: rpmdb corruption during installation of packages Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sunfish69@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:2.0b7) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0b7 Hello, On a fresh install of 11.4 Factory Milestone 4, I installed a few more packages and encountered an rpm2solv error complaining about a missing directory or file. The error could be reproduced by re-running the install operation with zypper -f in [pkgnames]. As I was doing the initial configuration and I was offline, I didn't save the error messages. When running the next install operation, I encountered similar error messages to the ones in this Fedora bug, for example: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468437 (see the attachment including the user's session) except that the filenames were different, of course. It included the line "rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery". I'm sorry but I didn't save the error messages, as I was trying to finish configuring the system. I found the relevant records in the Redhat/Fedora bugzilla and ran rpm --rebuilddb which seems to have fixed the error temporarily (at least I couldn't reproduce the bug last night). Here are the exact steps I followed: - used 11.4M4 x86_64 netinstall converted to bootable ISO with syslinux - deleted previous DOS partitions on disk, created LVM based setup with encryption (/boot: separate ext2, LVs: ext4) - booted the system and started adding packages, without error - adjusted a few sysconfig parameters and configured fingerprint auth etc - continued installing packages and encountered an rpm2solv error - re-ran the previous install operation and saw that the error came back - continued with configuration - disabled a handful of services (chkconfig) - tried to install more packages, the rpmdb panic kicked in - googled the solution and fixed the rpm db - shut down the machine (Is it possible that this error was not reported in openSUSE until now? A lot of users encountered this problem and got away with the rebuilddb as a solution. See http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=rpmdb%3A+PANIC+site%3Aopensuse.org&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= ) My configuration: Lenovo ThinkPad x61s, 64GB MLC SSD drive, root filesystem on LVM with dm-crypt, all LVs with ext4 filesystems. Minimal X11 installation. Extra repo Packman added, but no packages are installed from it (= the system is close to the 'vanilla' installation). The hardware is known to be free of errors. I can attach zypper logs later if necessary. Best regards LGee Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce Steps to Reproduce: 1. install system with ext4 2. install additional packages 3. ... Actual Results: The rpm database is corrupted. rpm --rebuilddb fixes it. Expected Results: The rpm database doesn't get corrupted. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
