[Bug 361329] New: After Kernel 2.6.22.17-0. 1 Open Office Quick Start is disabled with error on loading applet.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=361329 Summary: After Kernel 2.6.22.17-0.1 Open Office Quick Start is disabled with error on loading applet. Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Created an attachment (id=194565) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=194565) jpg image of error at boot which is displayed twice. The Open Office Quick Start applet is a very simple program to preload default OO Libraries into RAM at BOOT. This application can no longer do this with attached warning x 2 at time of boot and applet load. Whilst this issue is not of major concern by itself, ANY issue with Kernel changes that preclude pre-loading of such a simple application into registers is seen as most concerning 100% re=producible -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Are there any kernel log messages about anything like this? This error only became evident after the current and immediately after the prior recent Kernel change. This error cannot be re-produced with the default kernel and same architecture and software. That is very very strange.
Please clarify needinfo - Original text declares bug as 100% re-producible. Please reinstate needinfo if you cannot duplicate error and re-specify more information requests.
I can't duplicate this here, and we would really like to see some kernel log messages that show some kind of problem.
I would never lodge a possible Kernel fault without major considerations!
Ah, if only all of our users were so considerate :) I'm going to bounce this over to the OO developers to see if they have heard of this, or have any hints. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If I can supply any log information please re-instate needinfo status and advise log details you require..and thanks for you understanding and I too wish recipients of user bug reports also extended the same considerations ... ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It does not work if there is one already running. In some strange circumstances, it might happen that the KDE session management starts an OOo instance before the applet could start its own. Then the applet cannot start it and shows the above message just after login. If you want to enable the quickstarter feature, you must make sure that there is not any other OOo instance running: + quit the application if you see an OOo window + try "killall -9 soffice.bin" Then it should be possible to enable the quicstarter feature and it should work fine. If you see the problem just after login, you have to store KDE session without running OOo or with running the quickstarter instance. I am sorry. It is hard to fix this problem in the current implementation. The right solution would be to port the internal OOo quickstarter for KDE. Unfortunately, it is not so easy, because there are problems to get working the OOo and QT event loops together. Scott, does any from the above hints help you? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am afraid that the preload setting does not help. I am sorry, as I said, the current applet can't be fixed easily. It works in most cases => I will close this bug as WONTFIX. The best solution would be to port the integrated OpenOffice.org quickstarter for KDE. If wontfix then delete this application from future GM release and Online Updates - until functional - New Online update makes issue worse. There is NO logic in maintaining an application that is known not to function. 2.
