[Bug 620513] New: YaST2 sw_single: GTK+ GUI misses lost "Versions in repositories" feature
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620513 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620513#c0 Summary: YaST2 sw_single: GTK+ GUI misses lost "Versions in repositories" feature Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: RC 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sbrabec@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: mkudlvasr@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- GTK+ GUI for YaST2 sw_single lacks (or very successfully hides) "Versions in repositories" feature. It was present in 11.2 GTK+ GUI (as a combobox in the bottom part of the window) and it is present in 11.3 --qt GUI (as a radiobutton selection in the bottom part of the window, tab "Versions"). Yes, you can right click -> Show column -> Repository, but you can still only see the latest version repository and nothing else. You don't see other versions, you can not change the repository you want. (And even the Show column selection itself is forgot after quit.) Even "Options -> Allow vendor change" does not change the view in any way. Yes, you can run YaST2 --qt sw_single, but average GNOME user is not aware of it. Marking the bug as critical. It is a very annoing regression that makes impossible to perform some operations by an average user. For example this is not possible to do: - Select package from a particular repository. (Required while installing version sensitive library together with an application.) - Change a package from another repository. (Required while installing full versions of codecs.) - Revert update back to the package from the installation medium. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will assume for the moment it is the one numbered 2. Indeed the versions listing is now hidden by default. That's not unlikely the qt or ncurses plugin, which put the feature one-click away (or one keystroke away) given it's not an especially widely used function. Potential solutions: a) make Versions visible by default b) memorize whether the user made it visible last season c) move it after details I'm not sure about a). Stefan Hundhammer addressed this in bug 356410. There are indeed fringe cases where you do need to select a particular version, but if you're using it too heavily, it probably is symptomatic of a UI deficiency -- which is why we have e.g. introduced the "switch installed packages to the versions in this repository" for more common use cases. I'd vote for b) and c). c) should make the feature more eye-catching, since it's no longer packed in a corner, and b) is always a good idea and could save quite some clicks for any users who may use it heavily. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620513 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=620513#c5 --- Comment #5 from Stanislav Brabec <sbrabec@novell.com> 2010-07-07 18:51:31 CEST --- I overseen that the column 2 is also a treeview with item 1 folded. Heavy need of Versions is not an UI deficiency. It is a generic problem of advanced user with multiple repositories with the same package in a different shape and a symptom of legal limitations of some packages in some repositories. Well, and I found a bug in the implementation: 1. Subscribe to Packman 2. Search for gstreamer-0_10 3. Click to Dependencies and Versions without resizing the window Actual result: GUI enters into an infinite resize loop ("dancing letters" in the window) and must be killed. Regarding the GUI: I am not sure, whether others will have the same problem with reading the GUI, but I have and also my colleague also had a problem. The tree view mixes data that are read only and Versions that contains important functionality. I was thinking about: Either - Back to a separate comobobox (your b) or - Unfold Versions by default (your a) or - Fold Details by default (similar effect as your c) or - Return back to a single column (It would also display Dependencies a bit better and fix the dead loop) or - Add pane between column 1 and 2 (It would also allow to display Dependencies a bit better) or - Add combobox in the "Version" bound together with "Size", "Repository", and maybe "Supportability" columns in the list of packages. I would probably prefer the Version combobox column in the list of packages as the best solution and a separate combobox as the second best solution, but other solutions would be OK as well (combobox column is much more complicated than one line change). Logically I imagine: select a package, then proper repository/version and finally read (and read only) information from the tree view. On the other hand, the "Space available" combobox seems to be a bit superfluous. While installing, I would care only on free space in / (and eventually /usr, /var, /etc, /srv if mounted separately). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The combobox should surely include the repository (surely after click and should display it directly if Show column->Repository is selected). As I suspected (comment 13), if you close the details box, then it will not crash. I will have to take some time to model in my head how gtk parent and children are negotiating the optimal size to be dedicated to the children. Anyway, it seems clear that one possible solution is to just set a fixed width to the Details/Versions side of the information bar. There are some gtk structural changes (with functions now being used rather than looking up static variables), but prolly not relevant. Apparently though, 11.2 uses gtk 2.18.1, while I looked at 2.18.7, so I may have to recheck that, but I doubt there is anything relevant to be found given they are minor versions. I will have now to work the other way around, and deconstruct the test case. But it's pretty curious why the different results. Both systems use the same gtk version (comment 16). One factor I didn't mention in comment 22 is of course an environmental difference, because I couldn't pin it down to any precise configuration. I remembered of disabling the 3D effects; that did the trick. Not yet sure why; maybe it just makes the bug harder to reproduce given those effects cut on a lot of the need for layout recalculation. Anyway, as you can read from the comments in the test case, I found one simple solution: view = gtk.TextView() - view.set_wrap_mode (gtk.WRAP_WORD_CHAR) + view.set_wrap_mode (gtk.WRAP_WORD) That's it. I applied some stress to the test, and that does seem to do the trick. Not incredibly odd; I guess that forces the TextView to go through some more width negotiations. As an aesthetic change, got rid of the separators between the rows. Build service isn't working ATM. Will try to submit the changes later. Also Versions seems to be more visible. Yes, change of "Size", "License", "Installed at", "Latest Build" makes sense. Also change of "Installed Version", "Available Version", "Provides" and "Requires" makes sense. I would propose change from bold to italic. And probably "Developed by" and "Packaged by" should be changed from plain to italic as well. It would make things more consistent: Level 1 title (tree title): Bold. Level 2 title (subtitle): Italic. Just another small note to the current UI: Package maintainers typically split Changelog entries to 70-80 characters long lines with indentation. In the default view with the default size, only about 50-60 characters fit to a single line. This could be improved by: - if display is large enough, default to larger window - default to smalled font in Changelog - add pane between column 1 and 2 - move Changelog as last item and use multi span over both two columns -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That is the million dollar question. :) Personally, I dislike the italic fonts for the 2nd-level headers. But that could be just because I'm not used to it. I did typography in past, and its rules would prefer italic for subtitles and plain font for contents: Both italic inside plain text and plain text inside italic are considered as empasized. But the use of italic for titles (or non-standard text) and plain font for standard text is more convenient: Long italic texts are considered as a little bit slower to read. (The reverse use (plain font for emphasizing and italic for plain text) is used in prefaces or poetry typography.) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
