Do you have /bin/login and /etc/pam.d/login?
yes: /bin/login no: /etc/pam.d/login, only login.old and login.rpmsave, different sizes but same timestamps, from 19 Jan. rpm db query shows installed version is 3.35-6, but that is a 25 Feb rpm. rpm --replacepkgs -ivh login-3.35-6.i586.rpm created /etc/pam.d/login and eliminated the problem on i810 box. Fix on i845G box awaits further comment here.
What are the messages in /var/log/messages after a failed try to login?
near end of attachment
Your last /var/log/messages file looks like your system is broken, please make sure that really all dependencies are fullfilled, all permissions are correct, the files are existent and readable.
I don't know much about dep & perm troubleshooting. Is there some tool that checks to see the updaters haven't broken these? Updates on all 8 boxes were performed by smart command line because that's the only way I know on Factory to not have known working kernels and initrds replaced by possibly broken ones. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could be very well that this is a result of a first incomplete sync/status of Factory.
Well, this did happen on two different boxes, the first at least 8 days before the second, and I did do first updates in over a week on 7 other boxes on Saturday from downloads.opensuse.org, having it only happen to only one of the 7. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
