[Bug 499909] New: Mouseless install could use some UI tweaks
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=499909 Summary: Mouseless install could use some UI tweaks Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 1 Platform: 32bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: greg.riedesel@wwu.edu QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8.1.19) Gecko/20081213 SUSE/1.1.15-0.1 SeaMonkey/1.1.14 Mnenhy/0.7.6.0 * Throughout the install, there is no visible cue that drop-down lists are 'hot'. They move with the arrow keys, which is the only indicator. * The Package Selection screen for the detailed software install. When a pattern is selected, focus moves to the Package window. If doing a mouseless install, arrowing down the Pattern list to get to the right pattern involves a lot of Shift-Tab to get focus back to the Pattern window, arrow down, shift-tab back, arrow down, etc. Perhaps focus should not automatically move to the Pattern window in this case? The use-case for that would be a user using both the mouse and the keyboard for navigation, where clicking on the pattern needed allows them to simply arrow down to the package they need and then hitting enter to select it. It saves mouse-movements. For the mouseless user (such as one suffering from bug 498334), the keyboard is the only option so this default makes for an annoying back-and-forth to set up a customized system. There is no visual cue to indicate this. The only way to prove this is the hot drop-down is to use the arrow-down button to see if the value changes. The Space Bar could be used, but if focus is in the wrong spot it might cause an unwanted screen change. Both Language and Keyboard behave the same to me (with the little difference, that after changing language, the screen gets re-translated). Presing the keyboard shortuc of the particular witget (Alt+L, Alt+K) made up/down arrows work well. However, if I mis-type the keyboard short-cut, visually I don't notice which widget is selected. Is this what your report is about? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Using the [Alt]+[L] syntax will take you right to the control. The other method of getting there is to use the [tab] key, which has been the prime method of navigating a GUI without a mouse since at least Windows 3.10, and the Installer clearly supports. It's for this reason that 'tab order' is something that UI designers pay attention to. Take the 'Time Zone' screen as an example. There are nine controls in the tab order: 1: Next button (*) 2: Region drop-down 3: "Hardware Clock set to UTC" checkbox (+) 4: "Date and Time" Change button (*) 5: Time Zone drop-down 6: Unknown control (probably the map itself) 7: Help button (*) 8: Abort button (*) 9: Back button (*) The controls with an (*) are ones where there is a visual cue to indicate it is the active control. All of them are buttons, and all of them indicate their active status by throwing a dotted box around the button text. The "Hardware Clock set to UTC" does in fact have a dotted box around it, but the box is almost exactly the same color as the background graphic so I missed it the first three times I went looking for it. When tabbing around the later "Create New User" screen I noticed that the checkboxes there, which are positioned higher relative to the background graphic and have a lighter background, had a dotted box I went back and looked for one around the UTC control. It is there, but almost invisible. On the "Desktop Selection" screen, the radio-buttons have the same bounding box as the checkboxes. With the same contrast problem, but these are like the 'Create New User' checkbox in that they're high enough that the bounding box has good contrast against the background. On the "Create New User" screen, the free text fields for Full Name, User Name, and Password, all change color to indicate they're active. Also, the cursor appears in them to act as another cue. On the "Installation Settings" screen, the hot-links in the Settings list highlight as needed, and behave as you would expect. Here is a list of the controls used in the installer and how they indicate their active status: Check box: has a dotted bounding box around text to indicate active Radio box: has a dotted bounding box around text to indicate active Button: has a dotted bounding box around button text to indicate active Text entry box: Turns blue and cursor starts blinking to indicate active Hyperlinked Text page: Tab cycles through the hyperlinks, with a dotted bounding box around the hyperlink to indicate the active link Drop down control: Has no indicator The drop-down is the only control that doesn't signal its active status in some way. This makes the behavior of the drop-down box inconsistent with the rest of the UI. Putting a box around the text seems to be the way most other controls do this. Also, the box around the checkbox and radio controls needs to be tweaked so it is more visible on the "Time Zone" screen. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It starts at the Installation Summary screen, with the "Software" link hilighted. I then hit the Enter key to go into the pattern selection, then tabbed to the "Details" button and hit enter. This opened up the detailed package selection screen. I then hit [shift]+[tab] twice to bring the Pattern frame into the active state. I arrow down once, which hilights the "Gnome Desktop Environment" pattern, and the active frame changes to the upper right package-selection frame. To get back to the Pattern-Selection frame, I hit [shift]+[tab] again. Every time I arrow down or up in the Pattern Selection frame, the active frame moves to the package selection frame. As an example, if I want to install the "squid3" package in the "Internet Gateway" pattern, I have to do the "[down], [shift]+[tab]" tango 35 times before I can get to the pattern I want. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
