How does this particular version of Firefox handle malloc? Does it use any of the hacks from bug 503151? I've also thought about that but it would mean the upstream fix which we inheritated is not complete/correct. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Also rebooted the machine after 32 days uptime (no new kernel, but many other updates). Now everything works as expected. Maybe something was broken in MozillaFirefox-3.5 or maybe my machine had some problems after some network issues here in the company (but: everything else works). Wolfgang: if you like I can try to reproduce the problem with the original packages from comment #1 - otherwise I think we can close this. Trying to start the latest firefox today, I get again: lrupp@nagios-abuild:~> firefox firefox: nss_nis/nis-netgrp.c:75: _nss_nis_setnetgrent: Assertion `malloc_usable_size (netgrp->data) >= len + 1' failed. /usr/bin/firefox: line 128: 18974 Aborted $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@" But now I looked a but further for the problem... The interesting detail is in dmesg: rpcbind: server machcd not responding, timed out resp. in /var/log/messages: Aug 24 20:52:49 linux-wsxp kernel: rpcbind: server machcd not responding, timed out So it looks like a RPC/Caching problem - first suspect application in this area: nscd nagios-abuild:~ # /etc/init.d/nscd status Checking for Name Service Cache Daemon: dead nagios-abuild:~ # /etc/init.d/nscd start Starting Name Service Cache Daemon done lrupp@nagios-abuild:~> firefox *** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable). ^^ firefox starts as expected. So I'll open a new bug against nscd in the next days, when I've debugged the problem a bit more. In the end, it's interesting for me that (at the moment) only firefox can't start if nscd is down. Up to you, Wolfgang, to decide if this is a bug in firefox or not. Other applications (KDE-Apps, Opera) work as expected, even if nscd is down.... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And nscd doesn't crash on the same assert()ion failure because it is not using custom malloc. I think in this case the best thing is to get rid of the troublesome assert() since it doesn't really serve any purpose. I'm just worried if there isn't more trouble lurking around from nss deepbinding... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, not for sure. But that nscd can crash at all is something that didn't come into my mind... ;-) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As soon as nscd is stopped ^w crashed firefox cannot be startet. I run on ~150 machines a cronjob which starts nscsd every minute, since, lets see, when I compiled the rpm for it: - Jun 2010 The bug was reported: - July 2009 We can soon celebrate the fith birthday of this firefox bug, or we can check if ncscd is now stable again. Back in 2010 it wasn't and this is true since SuSE 7.3 which was releases ~2000? Ncsd has even a longer tradition of being unstable, that firefox not able to start withouth ncsd. But we have a bit of luck, cron is stable: FTW: */1 * * * * root /etc/init.d/nscd start 2>&1 >/dev/null since 2010. regards, Martin -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
