What version of grub do you have? Could you please attach your /boot/grub/menu.lst and output of 'hwinfo'?

Reflashing the BIOS from a fresh image might be worth a try, after 6 years. If the problem persists, then there's probably a more serious hardware defect. I assume this is the only machine having this problem?
