[Bug 230718] New: Splash Screen on Startup
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230718 Summary: Splash Screen on Startup Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: simonedice@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Hello: I have a laptop where I use an external monitor when docked and the laptop monitor when traveling. When I start the computer docked, everything works fine. However, when I start the computer when the computer is not docked, then I get an error with the splash screen stating something to the effect that something wasn't passed correctly and for me to then choose a mode. If I hit the space bar, then it logs in just fine but it doesn't have the splash screen. I can also choose some modes, but the ones that I have chosen out of list just cause the compute to load with a black screen until I get to the KDE log in screen where everything is fine. On shutdown, it goes back to black before the system is finally halted. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

What is that output? Or you talking about boot splash screen? Or a desktop splash screen (which desktop)? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I believe the error originates from a parameter passed to the kernel during loading. Once I get to the log-in screen, then everything is fine and I can log in. So, the steps are detailed below. When docked using external monitor and NOT set to dual head display 1: Turn on power, everything is fine. When un-docked using the 12" laptop monitor 1: Turn on computer 2: 2-8 seconds later, the black screen telling me to enter a mode. There are modes from 1 - 8 and next to the number are strings like (OxaI). The "OxaI" I put is not necessarily an option, but it isn't something like "1600/1200" or something that can be easily recognized/remembered. 3: I tried a couple of the modes, but then there when there would be the normal blue boot spask screens, it would be just black. I wait and then I would eventually get the log in screen which would be fine. It takes same time to load up. 3: I log in and everthing is ok. Update: I reinstalled and this time installed without the computer being docked. Everything is fine and I don't have the same problem. However, the boot spash screen is being stretched from the normal resolution that the monitor is, 1024x768, to the external monitor size 1600x1200. I was never able to figure out how to fix it. I'm pretty sure it is a paramater that is set on the boot line. However, I'm not sure. Hopefully it can be fixed though, as I'm not sure if other people who use external monitors that install while docked are running into the same problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230718 mhorvath@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |WONTFIX ------- Comment #3 from mhorvath@novell.com 2006-12-31 08:22 MST ------- It because during the installation the screen resolution is detected and written as a kernel parameter to the grub boot menu, and it's not changing dynamically according to the screen resolution. So if you install it undocked with a 1024x768 screen and then you connect it to a 1600x1200 screen you get the splash screen stretched, because the resolution of the screen is still 1024x768. And if you install it docked, with a 1600x1200 screen connected, the resolution 1600x1200 is written to the grub menu as the kernel parameter. So if un undock it, there will be only a 1024x768 screen, but the kernel parameter is still for the 1600x1200 resolution, which is not applicable for the new hardware configuration, so you have to choose some another resolution (the 1-8 modes). The first possible workaround is to install it with a lower resolution screen. The second workaround would be to create new grub menu enteries for different screen resolutions. I'm going to mark this as wontfix. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
