[Bug 463470] New: YAST ntp reference clock configuration not functional - ntp appears to not have refclock support
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=463470 Summary: YAST ntp reference clock configuration not functional - ntp appears to not have refclock support Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hvengel@astound.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Community User After applying the LinuxPPS patch set to the default kernel and configuring and installing it (and successfully testing the PPS functionality) I was unable to get the YAST ntp configuration utilities to correctly configure an Oncore reference clock. It appears that this part of YAST is still "a work in progress" since it does not do stuff that is required to make a reference clock work. I was trying to configure ntp to use a Motorola Oncore UT+ GPS. For the Oncore the missing things include: 1. It does not create the /etc/ntp.oncore.<0..9> configuration files for the Oncore and has no way to set or change the configuration items in these file(s). 2. It only allows setting up one symlink for the hardware but for most reference clocks, including the Oncore, two symlinks are needed to make the refclock driver work. One for the PPS device and one for the device that is used to talk to and get time information from the reference clock (normally a serial port). 3. It does not have a way to setup pps line discipline which needs to be running when the ntp daemon is started. In addition once I discovered that the YAST ntp stuff did not correctly handle refclock configuration I hand configured /etc/ntp.conf and /etc/ntp.oncore.0. Among other things I setup ntp to create a clockstats file and I also configured the oncore driver to use SHMEM. But when I bumped ntp it did not create a clockstats file and it did not create the SHMEM file. After trying everything I could think of I concluded that the ntp RPM is not built with refclock support. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=463470 User hvengel@astound.net added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=463470#c2 --- Comment #2 from Hal Engel <hvengel@astound.net> 2009-01-13 19:05:26 MST --- The use of refclocks with Linux is fairly new. So I am not surprised that you do not have access to one. The other issue is that different refclocks have different configuration requirements. One example is that Oncore refclocks have a separate configuration file (typically /etc/ntp.oncore<.x>) where most refclocks are configured using the fudge settings in the main ntp configuration file. I now have ntp build for refclock support. So I have a system that is functioning. I would be willing to test development versions of YAST that have refclock related updates if that would be helpful. The two most commonly used refclocks right now are NMEA GPS reveivers like the Garmin 18LVC and the Motorola Oncore series. Used Oncore modules are cheap and widely available but it does require some fabrication to make one of these modules into a working reclock (power supply and RS232 interface need to be wired up) but the low cost and high accuracy make these popular. The other really popular refclock is the Garmin 18LVC which is a NMEA device. This also requires some fabrications but this is much simpler than what is needed for an Oncore module. If these two drivers were working in YAST most users would be good to go. So to make SuSE 11.1 refclock ready the following is needed: 1. A LinuxPPS patched version of the kernel. The ntp-pps-2.6.27-rc3-bis.diff patch from http://ftp.enneenne.com/pub/misc/linuxpps/patches/ has been used with the current SuSE 11.1 kernel source RPM and it applied and built without issues and the PPS support is working. 2. A ntp RPM with nano second support and refclock support. 3. YAST support for refclocks. Users can get by without #3 but they will have to hand configure ntp for the refclock. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you with this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
