[Bug 222523] New: Resume from disk sometimes kills the HAL daemon
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222523 Summary: Resume from disk sometimes kills the HAL daemon Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: amantia@kde.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Since I have Beta2 I experience from time to time that hal is not running (see bug #220912 and #220558 for what this causes) after I start my computer. I always use suspend2disk, but sometimes I suspend via kpowersave, other time from the KDE suse menu or via the logout kicker applet. The problem doesn't seem to happen always and might - altough I'm not sure - depend on the way I suspend it. The system log for the resume period is the here. The only reference to hal is that powersave complains about it being stopped. Nov 19 10:03:34 stein syslog-ng[30588]: STATS: dropped 0 Nov 19 10:03:33 stein kernel: Freezing cpus ... https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222523 ------- Comment #3 from amantia@kde.org 2006-11-19 12:14 MST ------- 1) I will try even now if you tell me which package I should update (and from where). 2) Yes, rchal status shows it is not running. Resume seemed to cause other strange errors as well, like K3B not finding any device, the media notification not working in KDE or the xine egine for amarok complaining that it cannot initialize the device (using alsa). Restarting various services like resmgr, policykit and alsasound and the kded media manager service restored the correct behavior. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222523 ------- Comment #4 from hmacht@novell.com 2006-11-19 13:43 MST ------- So please try with command 'lshal' if hal is running, not rchal status. And just to verify, you do not need to restart hal to get correct behaviour? Only resmgr, PolicyKit and alsasound? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222523 ------- Comment #5 from amantia@kde.org 2006-11-19 13:57 MST ------- I will check lshal next time I reboot (I cannot do right now). For the second: no, it is enough if I issue "rchal start" to get kpowersave (and suspend) working again. The others are needed to get back permission to devices. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222523 ------- Comment #6 from hmacht@novell.com 2006-11-19 14:31 MST ------- Ok, the issue that you have to restart resmgr and PolicyKit should be fixed with RC1. Unfortunatelly, I really fear that it's HAL which is simply dying because of a obscure reason. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222523 amantia@kde.org changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |ASSIGNED Info Provider|amantia@kde.org | ------- Comment #7 from amantia@kde.org 2006-11-20 08:07 MST ------- Ok, finally it happened again. It was not easy to reproduce, I tried several times yesterday, no luck. Today morning it resumed normally. Today I left my wife here, and asked her to suspend when she is not working anymore. When I came back the problems appeared. She told me that she logged in (in a different X server) as her user, worked there, logged out from there and suspended the computer from my users using the Leave-Suspend to Disk from the kickoff menu. On resume I also got a "suspend failed" message box. Now: lshal Could not initialise connection to hald. Normally this means the HAL daemon (hald) is not running or not ready. k3b and amarok works ok now, so the device permission problem was not strictly related to this issue. kpowersave is grayed out, and in this case - even after rchal start - using the kicker logout applet or right click-logout from the KDE desktop is a "suicide" as it instantly kills your session. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
