[Bug 899789] New: Root password required to connect to wi-fi from GNOME Shell
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=899789 Bug ID: 899789 Summary: Root password required to connect to wi-fi from GNOME Shell Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201409* Hardware: PC OS: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME Assignee: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: mcatanzaro@gnome.org QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Using the Select Network option from the Wi-Fi submenu in the system status menu, I am prompted to enter the root password: "System policy prevents modification of network settings for all users." If I give up on adding the network from the shell and try to add the network from System Settings instead, no password is required. I guess the private connection patch doesn't work anymore. Note that I'm testing 13.2, not Factory, so this is GNOME Shell 3.12.2. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Whoops I lied, it is required, there appears to be no way for me to add a wireless network without entering the root password. This is odd because with a different test install from earlier today using the GNOME live CD, openSUSE 13.2 build 0011, I was not required to enter a password when adding the same wi-fi network in System Settings. I'm experiencing this bug after installing with the DVD (also build 0011) but I can't think of any reasonable explanation for the difference in behavior. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's because I tried to connect from gnome-shell first. That resulted in the wi-fi network being added to my network history, even though I'd never successfully connected. If I use System Settings to "forget" that network -- which apparently does not require any authentication (even though it's a system network!) -- then I can connect again without entering a password. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
