[Bug 611472] New: a lot of colored dots appears on the screen
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=611472 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=611472#c0 Summary: a lot of colored dots appears on the screen Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: thiago.sayao@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100513 SUSE/3.6.4-1.11 Firefox/3.6.4 When booting opensuse 11.3 when X starts a lot of colored dots appears on the screen. The mouse cursor appears as a square of colored dots (i took a photo, it's attached). It appears to be a issue of the radeonhd driver - i tried to install the radeon driver which worked fine for me, but it's not on the repositories. My card is an ATI RADEON HD2600 PRO. When installing, the screen content appeared, but it weirdly only used part of my screen. It's like i opened a bug about evolution crashing and you saying: uninstall evolution. KMS works perfectly on ubuntu 10.04, even with an updated kernel (2.6.34), so you guys probably screwed up something. I need KMS for my HDMI sound to work, otherwise opensuse is useless to me. ?!? So you are not interested in known issues/how to handle them and changes in general? That doesn't sound really clever to me. Apparently the issue no longer reproducable. Also reinstalling the kernel at some random time is not really supported. When we do a kernel update as official update (YaST Online update) we always warn the user to reboot the system as soon as possible. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Alex Deucher is talking about the LiveCD here, not a regular installation. We do add the appropriate DRM modules to the initrd unless you disable that via /etc/sysconfig/kernel:NO_KMS_IN_INITRD. I am interested because I am an "advanced user", but most users don't even know what release notes are. The point is: things should work out of the box - linux/opensuse should work for anyone, experienced or not. But as I am using a "beta" version i also take your point. Sorry.
Apparently the issue no longer reproducable. Also reinstalling the kernel at some random time is not really supported. When we do a kernel update as official update (YaST Online update) we always warn the user to reboot the system as soon as possible.
I can reproduce it very easily. For the sake of fixing it, i would even reinstall it if you want any extra information. As i showed on the picture i took, most users would give up opensuse if on the first boot they are presented with that screen (with colored dots). I have reinstalled the same kernel (provided officially by opensuse), why it is not supported? sayao@linux-g7ie:~$ uname -a Linux linux-g7ie 2.6.34-8-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-05-17 17:30:24 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
