[Bug 852678] New: Not booting when it's a RAID0
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852678 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=852678#c0 Summary: Not booting when it's a RAID0 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jorgeh@fsbcomputers.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 Hey guys, I just tried to upgrade/install OpenSUSE 13.1 on a machine that previously had 12.3 working just fine, it did install, but when it restarted to configure the new installation, it never did, instead it went to GRUB rescue stating there was no such device (RAID0), at first I thought it was related to the RAID0, but after trying rebuilding the RAID0 I keep getting the same. I ended up re-installing 12.3 to it and it works just fine, so there must be something weird happening with GRUB and RAID discs. Thanks Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Configure RAID0 on a computer 2. Install OpenSUSE 13.1 3. Actual Results: When it restarts to configure OpenSUSE, it never does. Expected Results: Continue installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Both the Install DVD and Rescue CD hung. Had to turn off drives to install, then turn drives back on after install. After boot the RAID0 stripe does not start. My first thought was that 13.1 did not like the number of drives, but now seeing this bug it looks like 13.1 is having a problem auto detecting RAID 0. I created mdadm.conf with mdadm --detail --scan >> /etc/mdadm.conf and mdadm is enabled. I tried installing openSUSE using MD for RAID and using the generic one (MD not enabled) and neither worked. Again, I don't know why this is happening now but it worked with previous versions and it also works just fine with Guidows 7, 8 and 2008, 2012 Servers Once the RAID has been configured using the BIOS tool it should work no matter which one is it RAID0 or 1, or 5, etc as long as the motherboard/RAID card supports it, the OS should get it to work. Thanks for looking into this. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That completely changes the picture. I know if one bug in that area but it's already present in 12.3, see bug #810840. I checked one of my other computers which has a RAID 0. It is a four drive RAID0 and does assemble on boot. It was an upgrade from 12.2 to 13.1. The system that has the problem, would not boot from the install dvd or the rescue cd until I turned off the drives. It will assemble the RAID5's but will not assemble the RAID0 at boot. I do not have any yast2 logs to provide as the RAID was built on 12.2, not this 13.1 install. From the hardware I suppose you have Intel Matrix Storage Manager (IMSM). This is likely one of the most common BIOS RAIDs but I don't have the hardware so I cannot really help.
