[Bug 553530] New: OpenSuse installer on dvd (openSUSE11_1_LOCAL.exe) for windows destroys windows boot file
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=553530 Summary: OpenSuse installer on dvd (openSUSE11_1_LOCAL.exe) for windows destroys windows boot file Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Windows Vista Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: muhlemmer@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.01 When using openSUSE11_1_LOCAL.exe (or openSUSE11_1_NET.exe), located in the root of the installer DVD (x86_64)it destroys the windows boot files. After rebooting and choosing for windows vista it just starts the opensuse installer. Rewriting the MBR doesn't help. What seems to be the problem? openSUSE11_1_LOCAL.exe is most probably designed for older windows. Until XP boot options where stored in the C:\boot.ini file. As from Windows Vista this is kept in a data store. The (only?) way to aces, read or modify this store is using bcdedit.exe in the command screen as an admin. In windows XP no problems. Request to make at least a note in the installer about this. After using a new install of windows needs to be done, since the boot store can only be modified from windows. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Insert openSuse install DVD in windows vista 2. Run openSUSE11_1_LOCAL.exe or openSUSE11_1_NET.exe 3. Reboot 4. Select Windows Vista in boot screen Actual Results: Installer booted Expected Results: Windows should boot I was not yet able to find an opensource program or script witch is able to send commands to bcdedit.exe. Maybe most easy is to create a clean boot.ini file, with the opensuse installer as only possibility. Then load the boot.ini file in bcdedit.exe. This is relatively easy, since it can be loaded as a legacy windows boot record. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, we are using bcdedit.exe in instlux yet. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
