The problem seems to be that the original author (1993-1995!) mixed up the type used within Xt code for handling the pointer for the adress of the error handler and the type of the error handler its self. I guess that the author also added a cast at handoff of the address of the error handler to avoid an error message about the arugments of XtSetWarningHandler() and XtSetErrorHandler().

Suddenly it is a lot clearer to me. My apologies if I upset you earlier. I assumed wrongly that the simplest fix was the best fix.
