OK sfdisk: ERROR: sector 0 does not have an msdos signature sfdisk: /dev/sdb: unrecognized partition table type sfdisk: No partitions found no room for partition descriptor sfdisk: bad input ==================================== also, when if i first populate sector 0, with a dummy partition table from a previously partitioned drive, dd if=dummy_partition of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1 the process seems to work OK.
