One of the USB disks (/dev/sdb) is not linked from /dev/disk/by-id, but it is in /dev/disk/by-label, /dev/disk/by-path, and /dev/disk/by-uuid. I'll attach the result of "ls -lR /dev/disk". Let me know what else you'd like. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot the system. 2. 3. Actual Results: No links to /dev/sdb from /dev/disk/by-id. Did you notice, though, that my printer shows up as sdc? It was happening before without any apparent ill effect, but I thought I'd make sure you were aware.
You are wondering why the printer gets in the sequence of devices of your disk tower? It is the card reader slot in the printer, right? Maybe the disk tower allocates b,c,d,e, and while probing for the disks it removes the allocated devices, and b and e become free again.
