[Bug 231426] New: Installation 10.2 (64bit) hangs when loading sata_nv on ASUS M2N-E motherboard
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231426 Summary: Installation 10.2 (64bit) hangs when loading sata_nv on ASUS M2N-E motherboard Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: RC 5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: joakim.langlet@seaview.se QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Motherboard: ASUS M2N-E, Processor: AMD64 Athlon X2 4200+, Memory: 4GB DDR2 (PC6400), Disks: SATA-2 (2x250GB Seagate + 1x300GB Maxtor) + NEC DVD-writer at ATA bus. Nvidia SATA RAID disabled in BIOS. Installation with apci=off (needed) will proceed to loading of "sata_nv" where it hangs. If "brokenmodules=sata_nv" is appended at boot, the installation proceeds and loads "generic" (sata driver?) only to say that "no disk is available for installation". It seems that the "nVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra" support needs some adjustments. Since the installation fails and no disk is accessable, there are no logs appended. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231426 ------- Comment #1 from Joseph.Comfort@asu.edu 2007-01-03 11:53 MST ------- (In reply to comment #0) This problem is essentially the same as in 231056/231059, and also several others (and on the mailing lists but not reported in bugzilla). I have nForce 430 support. Whatever the problems are, they are rather widespread and serious. It is basically a blocker because people are basically dead in the water. New masters and download ISOs *will* be needed ASAP. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The whole thing boils down to a bad BIOS on the M2N-E board. The BIOS version on the board was: 02.05. This BIOS seems to have the PCI interrupt handling all wrong. It was possible to install 10.2 with acpi=off and pollirq boot options but that cause other bad problems futher down the line. After upgrading BIOS, it works much better. The recommended BIOS version, that I now use, is: 05.02. Download this BIOS from ASUS and use the BIOS upgrade feature in the BIOS setup screens. Put the new BIOS file on a floppy. openSUSE 10.2 now runs nicely on the M2N-E motherboard. I must *NOT* forget to have a good BIOS before I report a bug next time. Cheers! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
