[Bug 211850] New: Timer-bug in SuSE SMP Kernel on Athlon X2 CPUs
time sleep 1
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211850 Summary: Timer-bug in SuSE SMP Kernel on Athlon X2 CPUs Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jolz@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de The smb-kernel installed in SuSE Linux 10.1 on Athlon X2 Processores seems to have a bug. Standard install, standard boot. sometimes (not everytime, not everyday) the timer goes crazy. The users sees: this command takes an radmon time (between ~0.5 and 5 secs) and displays another random time.
key repeat problem with KDE User presses one key, programs receive multiple keys. If KDE Key Repeat Settings (kcontrol->keyboard) are turned off, this seems to be better. the Text Console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) has no key-repeat problem.
some random other strange problems
Workaround: use the kernel parameter "clock=pit" and all seems to work fine. see also my posting in newsgroup alt.os.linux.suse: http://groups.google.de/group/alt.os.linux.suse/browse_frm/thread/ffec73fe35... since then, the kernel got updated at least once without fixing the problem. Current installed kernel having this problem: kernel-smp-2.6.16.21-0.25 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Don't know yet. is there a vmx for 10.2alpha? clock=pit option is an good workaround, but maybe this workaround should be found on a more prominent place (e.g. http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs). I'm shure, many users despair while getting such random errors. (I myself despaird while debugging a threaded program, which behaved really ugly!) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211850 ------- Comment #4 from jolz@gmx.de 2006-11-03 06:52 MST ------- Status update: Now, we have the SuSE 10.2 beta1. With the clock=pit option: Athlon X2-CPUs crash uncontrolable. Without clock=pit: System seems to run good (first few minutes...) If you had the workaround on your system, be shure to remove this before an upgrade. I hope, the bug is fixed now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
