[Bug 467495] New: random X crash at startup with intel 965 GM (drmOpenDevice: open result is -1)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=467495 Summary: random X crash at startup with intel 965 GM (drmOpenDevice: open result is -1) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: mar.pollo@gmail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; it; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-2.3 Firefox/3.0.5 Using intel 965 GM graphic card, sometimes (~75%) X crashes while starting and leaves you in text mode. Logging in as root and running # killall kdm # kdm always works!! (Does this mean that some needed service hadn't started up and now has?) I am using latest xorg-* RPMs from Xorg:X11 build service. I attach a diff from crashed /var/log/Xorg.0.log to running one. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Power on your laptop with intel 965 GM 2. Wait a crash 3. If it doesn't occur, reboot. (You won't have to wait long:-( ) Actual Results: X server crashed :-) Expected Results: Don't know, maybe it should work :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's news for me that this is fatal, i.e. Xserver terminates (it doesn't crash!). Also our displaymanagers try to start the Xserver 3 times before they give up. I'll try to reproduce this issue (which hasn't been reported yet and we got a lot of reports by 965GM users) on a similar machine by removing the kernel module. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can't reproduce this. Even when removing i915 kernel module. Maybe it helps to load the i915 module earlier in /etc/init.d/boot.local modprobe i915 ==> WORKSFORME -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does pipe A and B refer to monitors? If so, it seems that before crashes both monitor were been activated and this didn't occur when kdb was going to work.
