[Bug 343734] New: latest fglrx driver freezes my system (Radeon 9800 Pro)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343734 Summary: latest fglrx driver freezes my system (Radeon 9800 Pro) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: funtasyspace@yahoo.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: --- I just installed the latest 8.43.3 fglrx driver from the 'ATI Repository' for openSUSE 10.3 (x86_64). I have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (R350) video card. I can start up SAX2 and configure things as usual. On exiting SAX2 and hitting the 'Test Configuration' button, I can see the background being drawn, but in this moment my machine freezes completely. I can't login via SSH anymore, only a hard reset helps. I tried many different resolutions and settings in the SAX setup, but it doesn't matter... it freezes as soon as I click the 'Test Configuration' button. Only when I use the automatic default configuration by hitting the 'OK' button instead of 'Change Configuration' in the first SAX2 dialog, I'll get a working Xserver in runlevel 5. But this way I can't setup the resolution and my CRT Monitor Model + Settings. One thing I noticed is that the fglrx packages in the ATI Repository seem to be build against Kernel 2.6.22.13 whereas the most resent kernel for openSUSE 10.3 seems to be version 2.6.22.12. Calling /usr/bin/fglrx-kernel-build.sh fails with the error: line 30: pushd: /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx: File or Directory not found So I guess there's something seriously wrong with those fglrx packages in the 'ATI Repository'. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

One thing I noticed is that the fglrx packages in the ATI Repository seem to >be build against Kernel 2.6.22.13 whereas the most resent kernel for openSUSE >10.3 seems to be version 2.6.22.12. This is no problem, since these are kABI compatible and we use some magic in %post of our -kmp and kernel packages to create symlinks to kABI compatible kernel modules.

I'm asking, because on my Thinkpad T60p, I had to run this script after every minor kernel update. No, just saving the configuration without testing doesn't help either. When I switch to runlevel 5, the screen is just black (even the framebuffer died and all the virtual consoles are black). But I can still login via SSH and reboot the system. I don't had those problems with pervious versions of fglrx on this system. Running multiple Xservers was never a problem, until now. Could you check if there is a Modeline defined in /etc/X11/xorg.conf after running SaX2? If yes, please remove it. This can happen if your monitor does not support DDC. Please attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

If I did not, the Xserver started and I could login to KDE, but one of my cpu cores had 100% load all the time. After I ran this script, removed and reloaded the fglrx module and restarted X, everything was fine again. Sure that you did use the packages from the ATI repository and did not build the RPMs yourself?

I have to make a correction to my previous post, the framebuffer is already dead when I return from SAX by hitting 'Save Configuration'. I can still login via SSH and switch to runlevel 5, which brings up the Xserver. If I reboot, framebuffer and Xserver seem to work. Strange, I did this procedure 10 times tonight and after every reboot only the framebuffer was back again, but the Xserver was black. Now they both seem to work...
Sure that you did use the packages from the ATI repository and did not build the RPMs yourself? No, in previous versions (openSUSE 10.2) the fglrx driver in the ATI repository was never up to date, so I always downloaded the latest installer from the ATI/AMD website and followed the instructions at http://en.opensuse.org/ATI.
Was / is there a difference between the rpm package that is build by the ATI installer and the rpms in the ATI repository? I thought the only difference is, that the rpms in the ATI repository already contain the ready build kernel module for the recent kernel. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"The attachment you are attempting to access has been removed." ==> Bugzilla is (again) broken. :-( It is correct that you need to recompile the kernel module if you do *not* use the precompiled RPMS from the ATI repository. Is this issue now resolved for you? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you open a seperate bugreport for issue 2) ? Thanks. OK, created a new bug. See Bug #343784 .
It is correct that you need to recompile the kernel module if you do *not* use the precompiled RPMS from the ATI repository.
Yes, if I *don't* use the precomiled RPMS from the ATI Repository, I have to run fglrx-kernel-build.sh after every kernel update. Even if it is a minor update where the kABI shouldn't have changed. If I don't run this script, X still works, but causes permanently 100% cpu load. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is what I've said. I'll make sure the precompiled RPMs for openSUSE 10.3 in the ATI repository are up-to-date.
If I don't run this script, X still works, but causes permanently 100% cpu load. So it does make sense to use the kernel module. :-)
