[Bug 728646] New: GNOME Shell crashed with fglrx driver (GNOME 3.2 / openSUSE 12.1 RC2 / AMD Catalyst Beta 11.11)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728646 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728646#c0 Summary: GNOME Shell crashed with fglrx driver (GNOME 3.2 / openSUSE 12.1 RC2 / AMD Catalyst Beta 11.11) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: freespacer@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Ubuntu/10.04 Chromium/15.0.874.106 Chrome/15.0.874.106 Safari/535.2 Hi, I test the beta of AMD Catalyst 11.11 (fglrx) with GNOME 3.2 (openSUSE 12.1 RC2). I am the officially packaging script maintainer for AMD installer and beta tester. I am in constant contact with AMD. AMD (and me) have tested this driver with GNOME 3.2 and openSUSE 12.1 RC1. It works. But now with openSUSE 12.1 RC2, it does not work anymore and that is really annoying. The gnome shell crashed immediately after booting. AMD assumed that a regression patch was trigger the error. The GNOME maintainer should check this. # gnome-shell --sync --replace (gnome-shell:2383): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'gnome-shell' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'GLXBadRenderRequest'. (Details: serial 181 error_code 153 request_code 137 minor_code 1) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) There is no further information in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I try to debug this with gdb. But I get also no information. That is really crazy. How we can fix this in GNOME 3.2 (openSUSE 12.1 RC2) asap? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install openSUSE 12.1 RC2 with GNOME 3.2 2. Install fglrx driver 3. Reboot the computer Actual Results: GNOME Shell crashed Expected Results: GNOME Shell should run -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It works." - I always give a shot for people to stand and defend themselves, so please enlighten a poor dumb user on how to achieve that with RC1. Let me be clear: The rainbow effect is gone since 10.9, but the screen tearing when an application has a notification icon breaks everything, I find it hard to miss... Could you confirm you didn't had this issue? I'm sure a lot of people are interested in the magic recipe you used. I have tell already this issue to AMD. They know about the problem, but I do not know when they want to fix it. When I find a bug with fglrx, I report it to AMD first, of course. :-) Okay, let us find out, why Gnome Shell crashes and how we can fix this scary error. :-/ Regards, Sebastian -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

One of the references you provided in the GNOME bugzilla entry was a bug report I opened. I can give you the contact of John Bridgeman (though his focus is on the open source driver) and he might be able to help or point to someone who can help ("no promisses" though). About the RC1 tests, unless you had something which isn't really available for the general population, I find it hard to believe it worked, because it didn't worked for a few people I know with openSUSE, and there's lots of reports from other distros as well (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch, ...). And I generally don't believe much in miracles :) Lets see if the 'high powers' can fix this, it's really annoying. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I agree that ATI should know they're deprecated, but they haven't been responding to any of my emails or bug requests. Can someone at Novell get in touch with them and let them know? (But in the meantime, anyone using the ATI Catalyst driver needs this fix since ATI uses those folders but incorrectly never adds those paths to its known paths in the conf, so it crashes) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Egbert, we still use them for proprietary drivers by NVIDIA and AMD/ATI. Nothing else should be in there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(But in the meantime, anyone using the ATI Catalyst driver needs this fix since ATI uses those folders but incorrectly never adds those paths to its known paths in the conf, so it crashes)
The issue was that openSUSE removed the paths from /etc/ld.so.conf, and it has been me who forgot to tell Sebastian about this change, so he could adjust the packages accordingly in time, i.e. introduce a /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ati-fglrxG02.conf with the paths inside. He already did this meanwhile in git: commit 15cc06ab661445fa13f1f1c43d96ff42a25d5100 Author: Sebastian Siebert <freespacer@gmx.de> Date: Sun Nov 20 18:01:55 2011 +0100 SUSE: add search path for openSUSE 12.1 and some minor fixes - openSUSE 12.1: - add search path for dynamic libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib{,64} - change mode bits 644 => 755 for /usr/lib/* - add unsupported openSUSE 12.2 Unfortunately the current driver 11.12 does not include this change yet. Should be included in the next driver 12.12. I believe we've got the solution to this issue. The below steps appear to give proper direct rendering with opengl and catalyst:
1. copy/paste the following code and save as /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ati-fglrx.conf
# created by atiupgrade - Tue Jan 3 13:36:31 PST 2012 # delete this file when it's not needed anymmore /usr/X11R6/lib64 /usr/X11R6/lib
I only have /usr/X11R6/lib (32bit system)
2. run these commands as root:
/sbin/ldconfig /usr/lib64/fglrx/switchlibglx amd /usr/lib64/fglrx/switchlibGL amd
3. reboot
/usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibGL /usr/lib/fglrx/switchlibglx on 32bit systems accordingly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

6tr6tr R, the issues discussed in the forum are not the ones discussed here. I got the driver properly installed and direct rendering is available. It is just so hat there are bugs in the driver that cause crashes when using gnome shell. Things work fine with compiz (which uses indirect rendering). As far as I understood, for the issues described here, we'll just have to wait for an update from AMD. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
