[Bug 712221] New: Black Screen/No Display after Booting - nomodeset brings only resolustion 1024x768
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=712221 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=712221#c0 Summary: Black Screen/No Display after Booting - nomodeset brings only resolustion 1024x768 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hfischer@eschkitai.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=445782) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=445782) hwinfo on my x86_64 computer User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); de; rv:1.9.2.18) Gecko/20110614 Firefox/3.6.18 After Booting system with grub, no display is given. System itself worked normally, a login through ssh or typing a blind login is possible. But the display stays black. There helps no init 3 or kill X. Workaraound: Give grub the option 'nomodeset'. Then I get a resolution for my display of 1024x768@70Hz. It makes 1440x900 (Samsung SyncMaster 931bw). Graphic chip on Mainboard, i915. For the first (and second) Kernel of the openSUSE DVD Master 11.4 it worked all fine. Now using the vanilla kernels by opensuse rpms. They worked fine. Why not standard kernel 2.6.37.6-47.1 (and the formerly kernel 2.6.37.6-46). Solving the problem over grub or putting the intelfb into initrd didn't work. This problem occurs on two machines with a similiar installation of openSUSE. One machine is a 64bit with four CPUs with intel chip onboard, the other one 32bit with a ATI chip onboard. The coming 12.1 openSUSE (live CD) works fine with my display. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Booting default (or desktop) Kernel with Suse-Patches 2. See GRUB choosing kernel 2.6.37.6-47.1 3. See for a moment GRUB message loading his stage 4. Display will be black 5. System boot normally without any display 6. Display goes on standby Actual Results: Booting the kernel installed by YaST during a update. Repos: openSUSE standard, KDE4-Factory, Packman. Changing the display manager without any effect. Expected Results: Loading display with the resolution 1440x68@60Hz. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

With failsafe options it works but I get only a lower resolution of 768x1024. What can I do to help you to identify this bug? kernel 3.1.0-rc5-1-vanilla works fine, but its infrastructure isn't able to find modules for using vmware and virtualbox. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will you attach dmesg from a another machine. On this machine the failure is similiar, but not the same. But I think it is the same misconfiguration of the kernel. The other machine (32bit, grafic by ATI) boots normal and tunes the screen resolution to the correct value. But: All few seconds the screen gets black. If you end your session over the kdm3 or kdm4 you lost the screen output - it will be black. init 3 oder init 5 do not correct that. Only a reboot helps. /var/log/messages displays: Sep 22 15:39:49 Dirac polkitd(authority=local): Unregistered Authentication Agent for unix-session:/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session1 (system bus name :1.27, object path /org/kde/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale de_DE.UTF-8) Sep 22 15:39:50 Dirac kernel: [ 1879.852810] mtrr: no MTRR for e8000000,2000000 found Sep 22 15:39:51 Dirac acpid: 1 client rule loaded Sep 22 15:39:52 Dirac kernel: [ 1881.263870] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id Sep 22 15:40:19 Dirac acpid: 1 client rule loaded Sep 22 15:40:19 Dirac kernel: [ 1908.358371] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id Sep 22 15:40:45 Dirac sshd[10772]: Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for root from 192.168.20.1 port 57568 ssh2 May be, that log gives you a hint what goes wrong with suse-default-kernels. dmesg for my 64bit machine is attached. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I didn't test the others ones. As a workaround I will test a dvi-d-cable for my display. Perhaps if there will not found the pins for the analog signal, then the kernel will use dvi and only that. But I think better will be a solution made by software. The vanilla kernel chose the properly version of signal. I think, this problem can be solved with another setting of configuration in the kernel, but I have no idea, what and where to configure this behaviour in 2000 possibilities in the linux kernel. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just found out: My cable only works digital. It has no pins for analog signal built in. The failure of suse kernels cannot solved over hardware. While seeing the bootsplash it has been set to the correct resolution. Why the kernel will disconnect the screen? vga=0x317 for booting the kernel has no effect. nomodeset sets the solution on standard of 768x1024 - not really usable on my display. Similiar problems with a lost resolution of display appeared for other machines, especially update for openSUSE 11.3 to openSUSE 11.4. Reports against openSUSE 11.4 and prior will not get the attention needed to resolve them before openSUSE 12.2 is release and openSUSE 11.4 becomes unmaintained. Please re-test with openSUSE 12.1 or openSUSE RC2+ and re-open with an updated Product if you still encounter your issue. We apologize for this issue not getting the attention it deserves but we are focusing our resources in the area where they will have the most impact for our users. We're working hard to make openSUSE 12.2 the best openSUSE release yet! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
