[Bug 204354] New: Suport for 32bit WWW browser plugins on 64bit hardware with nspluginwrapper
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204354 Summary: Suport for 32bit WWW browser plugins on 64bit hardware with nspluginwrapper Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: one_way@online.de QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com How about using nspluginwrapper (http://www.gibix.net/projects/nspluginwrapper/) in order to able to run 32bit plugins in 64bit internet browsers (Konqueror,Firefox)? Advantage would be that both 32- and 64bit plugins could be used parallel. nspluginwrapper seems to work rather good. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-bugs+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-bugs+help@opensuse.org

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204354 ------- Comment #3 from one_way@online.de 2006-09-08 09:06 MST ------- The disadvantage with konqueror's plugin system is that you can either use 32bit plugins (kdebase-nsplugin) oder 64bit plugins (kdebase-nsplugin64), not both at the same time. AFAIK, has this changed recently? Would be great! Using the above mentioned package you can install konqueror's 64bit plugin support and nevertheless use 32bit plugins alongside. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

So I'd think this is way more interesting for firefox -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204354 ------- Comment #5 from one_way@online.de 2006-09-11 10:48 MST ------- If Firefox would use the plugin, it would be available for Konqueror, too? I use it in Konqueror because so I can use the 64 bit Kaffeine/xine-plugin for multimedia stuff (without having to install all 32 bit packages and dependancies) and the 32 bit flash at the same time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204354 ------- Comment #6 from one_way@online.de 2007-03-28 21:42 MST ------- The nspluginwrapper packages as provided by the openSUSE Mozilla repository don't work for me; however, if I take the generic RPMs as provided by the author's web site, I can use 32bit Plugins in konqueror and Firefox (most of the time). If this is not fixable, I'd simply propose to use the original author's packages instead of shipping (OK, it's only on a add-on repository) broken packages? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

(Different from the original packages, the 32 bit packages seem to be designed as "i586", and they are not marked as dependent on the 64 bit packages?!)
As the packages contain i586 code and not x86-64 code they are named .i586.rpm, yes. nspluginwrapper-i386-x.y-z.i586.rpm requires nspluginwrapper-x.y-z.x86_64.rpm to be installed AFAICS. The other way round is not required (but maybe suggested).
--- linux:~ # nspluginwrapper -l linux:~ # linux:~ # nspluginwrapper -i /usr/lib/browser-plugins/nphelix.so linux:~ # nspluginwrapper -l linux:~ #
No error message, nothing, the plugins are not listed and are not working.
Will investigate. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It's the other way round actually. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204354 ------- Comment #11 from one_way@online.de 2007-03-29 09:59 MST ------- Wouldn't it make sense to make the packages mutually dependent? Considering the naming, another suggestion: For 64bit openSUSE there seems to be a convention to tag 32bit packages necessary on 64bit systems for compatibility reasons as "x86_64" nevertheless (e.g. glibc-32bit.x86_64.rpm). This would IMHO make sense in this case, too. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204354 wolfgang@rosenauer.org changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|ASSIGNED |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED ------- Comment #12 from wolfgang@rosenauer.org 2007-03-29 11:45 MST ------- The target is to have less hard requirements than more. I've added a Suggests now. You are more or less right about the naming but the baselibs approach you do suggest isn't really identical to that. So a naming how it is done upstream makes sense IMHO but isn't possible within the buildservice. We can't build x86 code within a x86-64 build environment. The bug you've seen should be fixed with the upcoming package in the repository. Please note that installation of plugins-wrappers worked for me in every case but removal and listing didn't (maybe also updating). Thanks for your report and feel free to report bugs before suggesting to drop anything ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
