[Bug 458903] New: The Desktop Trash Function Has The Ability To Permanently Delete Real Files
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=458903 Summary: The Desktop Trash Function Has The Ability To Permanently Delete Real Files Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Applications AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer The Desktop Trash can opens the Dolphin File Manager in the Trash Directory of the currently logged-in user. As long as the user does NOT move directory it is safe. The File Manager displays quick access to other NON-Trash Directory files and permits the user to permanently delete any File inside or out of the Trash Directory. The other issue with the Trash Directory is poor. Deletion of any other user files ownership outside the currently logged in user requires refinement as is it not possible to delete Root Trash or any other users Trash that is at odds with the currently logged in users group or file ownership. We need to find a more secure and safe way of managing file permissions that have essentially been moved to a trash directory, irrespective of origin file permission and ownership. We also need to develop 1 Single Trash can for ALL files that have been moved to the 'Wastebin', irrespective of original file permission and also provide reversal back to original file permission and location if an item is restored. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What happens if I delete the Files that either belong to No-Group/No-Body OR AT/Users in the case of a samba server. What happens to NFS Servers, where the file Permission is RW/RW/RW and whew created by the NFS Client. I correctly have the ability to move both of above to the 'Wastbin' However If I enter the Desktop "Trash Can" I cannot restore the files as above, nor permanently delete them. The Desk Top "Trash Can" is totally able to Permanently delete all of the users real files as it is not constrained to the users 'Trash' Directory. Any Application with the title 'Trash Can' which can permanently delete ANY users files by just a change on the side Directory/Location Listing is NOT a Trash Can At ALL. I dont quite see this as a feature - but will acknowledge your ability to do so;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In my mind I cannot still justify why a Desktop Icon with The Title 'Trash' is actually a fully functional file manager with all its capabilities with the exception that it opens in 'trash' directory/file by default. The user has NO restriction on what they can do to ALL other User Files and NO warning - other serious problems are above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Community use have NO access to openFATE and NO ability to automate a request for Functional Change - could you please initiate the openFATE request and bat for me? The concept that we have a Desktop Icon Labeled Trash Can that can easily delete any real file without a users normal knowledge is contrary to the Icons Description and action! The other issue about restoration of file permissions of a file/directory that IS in the Trash needs more thought particularly root trash can and restoration and other ownership of files created by a NFS user/samba user etc. Our current Trash Can functionality is looking rather poor in its current context.
