[Bug 552305] New: The Boot Process is Unable to Discover New Hardware OR Any Hardware Changes
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=552305 Summary: The Boot Process is Unable to Discover New Hardware OR Any Hardware Changes Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042700 SUSE/3.0.10-1.1.1 Firefox/3.0.10 I swapped out my CD/DVD +R to being the same device type as a New CD/DVD +RW. The problem is that the hardware profile tells me I still have only a CD/DVD+R Device installed. I swap out the Monitor Type of the same PC with a new Monitor with Speakers and yet the Hardware Profile is unable to detect any changes. In a sense we cannot provide the equivalent of Plug and Pray. Currently once Install has discovered the current devices of the PC there is NO feasible way, except a new installation, to discover and update the hardware profile and settings. This goes for just about all other hardware changes not simply the monitor or CD/DVD device change. We currently do NOT cope with ANY hardware change except at the time of Installation where we actually go out looking for what is out there. We have the process to discover all Hardware, yet we can not run it retrospective to an installation. In order to find or look for new hardware by default, would significantly delay the already criticised, boot process time delay. In order to maintain both the ability to discover New Hardware and Preserve the current boot process, perhaps we should think about more creative ways of doing this. One possible solution would be to initiate new hardware search and discovery via auto-online update, or to offer a "Discover new Hardware as a separate function of a user initiated option in Yast>Hardware. Another option may be to add an extra tick box to Yast>Hardware>Hardware Profile>"Discover New Hardware on Boot" I do not think it is feasible to burden the Kernel with such continual monitoring for any hardware change nor do I think the default boot process should be changed. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Replace the Monitor or Device type of just about anything. 2. 3. Actual Results: NO New Hardware is ever discovered and changes made one installation has been performed. It is easily possible to change the monitor type and never be able to see the display again let alone change/.add any other device - Its very very bad and we do not handle change very well at all of not ever! Expected Results: We should be able to cope with hardware changers other that at installation. We just need to find a more creative way of doing this without changing the Kernel - see Details. This is NOT an enhancement request, its an issue we currently have NO provision for doing so and its most serious. I would anticipate that by 11.3, we should be able to do this if not before via online update. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
