Parted and the kernel use partition number 1 for the partition table itself and start the first "real" partition with partition number 2. EVMS suppresses the partition table and starts the first "real" partition with 1. So if YaST2 tells EVMS to use sda3 for the EVMS container this fails since EVMS does not know a partition with number 3 but knows this partition as sda2. This problem will also severly confuse users using evmsgui since the partition numbers there will not match the partition numbers used by kernel and parted. To fix that I would suggest to change EVMS plugin for mac disk label so that it uses partition number 2 as the first "real" partition and so there is consistency in partition numbering used by EVMS, parted and linux kernel as is the case for all other disk labels. Reassigning to Changju as maintainer of EVMS. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219788 ------- Comment #6 from fehr@novell.com 2006-12-07 03:06 MST ------- I did not say the detection and naming in EVMS is wrong it is just different to the naming in kernel and parted and this is cause of the problems in YaST2 and will certainly causing confusion for users using EVMSGUI and other tools. - What kernel calls hdb1 is hdb_mac_metadata in EVMS - What kernel calls hdb2 is hdb1 in EVMS - What kernel calls hdb3 is hdb2 in EVMS The difference between hdb1 and hdb_mac_metadata does not matter. What I suggest is to change the naming in EVMS to start partition numbers at 2 so there are the same names used in kernel and EVMS for the same disk area (hdb2 and hdb3). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219788 ------- Comment #9 from fehr@novell.com 2006-12-07 09:32 MST ------- Thanks, this does exactly what I wanted. I just tried it with my test disk containing mac disk label. With this patch applied the problems with mac disk label and EVMS should be gone. I would suggest adding this patch to SLES10 SP1 and STABLE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
