[Bug 549919] New: There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=549919 Summary: There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: roger@opq.se QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-3.2 Firefox/3.5.3 After an install of RC1, there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf, even though there is a xorg.conf.install. Nonetheless, X starts. Except that the fonts are way too small. I think this is because the display physical dimensions (mm) are wrong. I was going to change the dimensions when I found there was no file to change. Shouldn't there be such a file? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install RC1 2. 3. Actual Results: No /etc/X11/xorg.conf Expected Results: /etc/X11/xorg.conf sould exist. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Apparently your monitor did not provide the right DPI via DDC. Indeed in some rare cases you still need a xorg.conf, in that case to set the DPI value right. You can easily create one by running 'sax2 -r'. Still you need to edit the file manually. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In fact, sax makes a xorg.conf file. Sax is a SUSE thing, so "We no longer write a xorg.conf file by default" is rather inaccurate. I would find it very hard to say that what sax does by default is not the same as what openSUSE does by default. Just run sax, make no changes, and save settings, and (1) you get an xorg.conf file, and (2) your display looks different. In my case, it was the fonts. Remember that, when testing the new (not really new in my case - as no changes were made) sax does not show the fonts that will be used as a result of the current settings. Only the resolution and position of things the whole graphics area. Also, when running sax, the physical size of my display was correctly detected. However, after the RC1 install, when there was no xorg, conf file, xdpyinfo reported that a totally incorrect physical display size was being used. So the display size that is detected by sax is not detected or not used during the install. Without an xorg.conf file, how is the display size determined? As I get mixed results (sax gets it right, but X without an xorg.conf file does not), I am guessing that something is not quite right here. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When I found that this was expected behavior, I think this bug is not a bug. The only thing I can add is that I have now installed the proprietary nvidia drivers. Still without an xorg.conf file. With the nvidia drivers, the display size is sensed. With the x.org drivers, it is not sensed, and is set incorrectly. In both cases the resolution is correct. I mean the physical size. When the display size is incorrect, the fonts are very small - but still relatively in proportion in and within applications (kde desktop). When the display size is correct, the font proportions look crappy. For example, in firefox, the menu fonts are rather large, while the content fonts are always extremely small. In the KDE desktop, the fonts under icons look too big. In YaST, in the Package Groups list, the font is unusually big compared to the fonts used elsewhere in Yast. I realize this appears to veer of the bug topic. But it was this odd font behavior that made me look at xorg.conf in the first place. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So, it can take a few days for me to get information. My response in comment #7 was not to imply that I do not want to contribute the needed information. My earlier response today remains accurate. I have removed the proprietary driver, and am attaching the the requested information. I think the file names tell whivh is which. This is now a RC2 machine.
