You can get it back by installing extensions, but doing that you are using a non-standard setup. Unfortunately hplip upstream is mostly unmaintained. Upstream basically just adds new PPDs. Is there evidence that this is an openSUSE-only issue; i.e. does it only happen with the openSUSE RPM package and not with the binary from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/, or does it work correctly e.g. on Ubuntu but not on openSUSE?
