[Bug 222499] New: gdm starts multiple times - ends up no gdm
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222499 Summary: gdm starts multiple times - ends up no gdm Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fred.blaise@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Apparently, after installing the latest nvidia driver 9629 (from nvidia site, via their shell script), gdm starts multiple times, and VT-7 ends up with no gdm at all. See below: 4 S root 3475 1 0 75 0 - 3090 - 21:09 ? 00:00:00 /opt/gnome/sbin/gdm 5 S root 3539 3475 0 76 0 - 3089 wait 21:09 ? 00:00:00 /opt/gnome/sbin/gdm 4 S root 3558 3539 0 77 0 - 393 wait 21:10 ? 00:00:00 /opt/gnome/lib/gdm/gdmopen -l /bin/sh -c /usr/bin/dialog --yesno 'There already appears to be an X server running on display :0. Should another display number by tried? Answering no will cause GDM to attempt starting the server on :0 again. (You can change consoles by pressing Ctrl-Alt plus a function key, such as Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go to console 7. X servers usually run on consoles 7 and higher.)' 16 70 Have to killall gdm, and restart it, and no problem then. I looked at the X log, and gdm log, but there seems to be no error showing up. I'm using Xgl/Compiz. Will try with metacity, and see if this behavior is reproduceable then. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Since this is not the third party driver for opensuse made available through our 3rd part vendor repositories, . which is simmply not available for openSUSE. So what should have the reporter done else to install the driver so he can test Xgl/compiz with a NVIDIA card?

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222499 ------- Comment #6 from danw@novell.com 2006-11-20 14:57 MST ------- i just installed the nvidia driver from stefan's repo on my x86_64 box, and I had to manually enable 3D acceleration in sax to get xgl to run. IIRC, with the old nvidia driver, this happened automatically (and there was no way to *not* have 3D enabled) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
