http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=965071 Bug ID: 965071 Summary: After resume no screen displayed on external monitor Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org Assignee: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: hkuehnemund@suse.com QA Contact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- issue: Lenovo t440p with up to date Leap 42.1 sitting in docking station. External screen enabled, Lid open but laptop screen disabled (-> X/KDE5 displayed only on external screen). Then Suspend is chosen from the Menu (Launcher -> Power / Session -> Suspend). Laptop was is suspend for ~36 hours. After 36 hours power button was pressed but both screens stay dark (no signal). Pressing ALT+CTRL+F1 however showed tty1 on the external screen. Pressing ALT+CTRL+F7 finally showed X/KDE5 password prompt on external screen. expected result: after resume, no switch to tty is necessary. External screen should directly display password prompt -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

To clarify "without docking station" means i) without external screen - or ii) with external screen attached?
In case of i) the issue is not showing up, resume shows the password prompt on the laptop screen.
Ok, that's an important pointer.
Do you want me to test setup ii)? Can do that over the weekend.
If you can do ii) as well, it would be great. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

So laptop was not in docking station and external display (DELL U2312M) was connected with VGA cable. Unfortunately, the display was not recognized correctly, so I was only able to set 1024x768 within the KDE display settings applications, although if connected via docking station + DVI the full resolution, which is 1920 is available. I may have to file a new bug for that. Anyway, after 4 days and waking up by pressing the power button, the external display showed the desktop again (in 1024). Another bug surfaced by doing the above: Now, when in docking station, the desktop is ONLY shown on the external display as well as the laptop display, when the VGA cable is connected. When disconnecting the VGA cable, all screens turn black (so signal). So since I connected the VGA cable once for trying to fix the resume issue, it broke the entire display settings. I tried to remove .kde4 as well as .config, but that didn't help. I guess I need to open a new bug for that? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

This could be your monitor/cable as well. You should replug it and see if it starts working again. Your chipset is a Hawsell GT2 (PCI dev ID: 0x0416) - the same one I've got here on an HP machine: I have no problems detecting the correct video mode. If you see this issue with a different monitor/cable combo as well, please provide the following: 1. output of 'xrandr -q --verbose' when this monitor is connected. 2. Add 'drm.debug=0x4' to the kernel command line, reboot and provide the output of 'dmesg'.
for that. Anyway, after 4 days and waking up by pressing the power button, the external display showed the desktop again (in 1024).
OK.

Yes, but most likely not with me. This looks very much like a KDE issue.
I'm not even sure how to help you over this hump: It is difficult to operate
the desktop configuration tool when you can't see. If KDE still keeps the
authoirzation file in the standard location, you can do the following: log into
your account from remote (this way you will get your authorization file),
change the DISPLAY variable to :0 (export DISPLAY=:0) then use 'xrandr -q' to
query the available outputs. You should see the LVDS and the DVI on the docking
station marked connected. ON the mode lists below you will see the currently
enabled mode marked with a '+'. Pick the mode you want ('*' marks the
preferred, ie. native mode) and do 'xrandr --output
