[Bug 381686] New: Pulseaudio useless for 5.1 audio
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381686 Summary: Pulseaudio useless for 5.1 audio Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: bjorn.lie@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- If one has a proper speakersetup, and not just laptop speakers, pulseaudio is useless. As far as I've been able to figure out, its possible to make pulse behave correctly by editing /etc/pulse/default.pa Having to resort to config file editing for something as ordinary as 5.1 (or 4.0) speakers is bonkers in 2008. Recomend that everyone with setups like mine ripp out all pulseaudio related packages and install esound if using gnome. That will put you to pre 11 soundstate, which works perfectly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381686 User bjorn.lie@gmail.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381686#c3 --- Comment #3 from Bjørn Lie <bjorn.lie@gmail.com> 2008-04-23 14:30:04 MST --- I'd like to add that performance is horrible. Playing a mp3 in Banshee and changing active window (to firefox or whatever) makes the playback skip...... Further, there is now way to control the individual channels, aka move the volume for one channel == move for all channels (and there is no way to uncheck lock for all) Opening up alsamixer helps somewhat, if you are able to figure out that the old mixer (default) is not the one you want, but have to change to ALSA PCM on surround51:0 (ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback) In this applet it's possible to unlock the channels and control them individuallay, but if one touches the PA Volumecontrol, everyting reverts to same audio level for all channels. (ofcource this all only works if you have figured out that one now has to edit a config file for makeing stuff that just worked before work now) But the biggest problem is what I started with in this comment, the performance. For someone actually doing something productive with sound under linux will be running for the hills, the latency for this "sound server" is appaling. I know pulseaudio is all the rave now for all distros, and that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I say the bread is not cooked yet, the distros took it out of the oven to early.... PS, just for fun I did a search in ubuntu forums, one of the first hits was this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=754125&highlight=pulseaudio&page=4 Why is Pulse Audio included with 8.04 by default? Okay.... I love the ability to manage audio streams, but it seems like there's a lot of features that are still missing, particularly a decent to fully functional mixer for all audio channels. My overall impression: I think some users are going to be pissed when they install 8.04 and all of a sudden their sound only comes out of two front speakers instead of all of them, and no way to adjust bass and treble. I'm one such user, disappointed (for the time being) by Pulse Audio's LACK of features. It's great proof on concept, but is it really ready to be included with Ubuntu by default? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(It does fix the gmm issue) About the shield, yeah I just found it, was about to write a DOH here, but I have to say, its not very obvious. But hey, that is a minor issue. Sure I can attach the daemon.conf, but the only change I've made sofar is the one you linked to. aka ; default-sample-format = s16le ; default-sample-rate = 44100 default-sample-channels = 6 <-- uncommented this and changed it to 6 (default 2) but as you see in the faq - making this change default is not possible Quote: Many people have a surround card, but have speakers for just two channels, so PulseAudio can't really default to a surround setup. /end Q So this is a upstream issue. Upstream has to come up with a gui for making this change. We have had a gui for this in alsa for ages.. What we need, dare I say it, is a sound applet like the one in the "other" OS, where the user gets a easy to understand graphical display of possible speakerssetup (headphones,2.0, 2.1, 4.0 etc) I'd like to say that I'm a bit calmer now than I was when I first made the bug, but still, pulseaudio look like a great idea, just not quite ready for general usage. I have been looking at these ; system-instance = no ; disable-shm = no ; high-priority = yes ; nice-level = -11 ; realtime-scheduling = no ; realtime-priority = 5 I will be playing around with these and see if I can make it work better. I'll also edit the wikipage I made about pulseaudio where I recomended everyone with more than stereospeakers to uninstall pulseaudio faster than you can type zypper rm ;) It seems to be somewhat fixable atleast :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Issues : The speaker selector always returns to stereo, it should read the logged in user's .pulse.... files and find what value to display - meaning if I set it to be 4.0 it should stay on 4.0 the next time I open this applet. nr 2. As you said, I have to manually kill pulseaudio with pulseaudio -k and start it again with pulseaudio -D nr 3. I as far as I can tell ,it doesn't always get the speakersetting I'm trying to give it (getting it back to 2.0 seems to be the hardest) nr 4. Make sure that its known that we now configure pulseaudio per user, and not in /etc/pulse/pulsefiles... nr 5 this new thing made my soundapplet die 2 times :) I'll attach the bugbuddy report nr 6. making default-fragments = 16 default-fragment-size-msec = 21 default for everyone might be a bad idea, these values can make problems for other people with other soundcards/chips for all I know. yes, that part is still missing in the patch, I have it almost complete now, so will post new package as soon as it's done
nr 2. As you said, I have to manually kill pulseaudio with pulseaudio -k and start it again with pulseaudio -D
ok, I'll add code to respawn pulseaudio, so that it's not needed to do it by hand
nr 3. I as far as I can tell ,it doesn't always get the speakersetting I'm trying to give it (getting it back to 2.0 seems to be the hardest)
hmm, that's bad, does it only happen with 2.0 or with others ?
nr 4. Make sure that its known that we now configure pulseaudio per user, and not in /etc/pulse/pulsefiles...
yes, with this change we copy system-wide daemon.conf to the user's home, so with updates there could be problems, when some new thing gets added to the system-wide config file
nr 6. making default-fragments = 16 default-fragment-size-msec = 21 default for everyone might be a bad idea, these values can make problems for other people with other soundcards/chips for all I know. Stay with upstream for this?
