[Bug 614062] New: VT1708S: No sound
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=614062 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=614062#c0 Summary: VT1708S: No sound Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Milestone 7 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: panos.asproulis@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.4) Gecko/20100513 SUSE/3.6.4-1.11 Firefox/3.6.4 My PC has the ASUS P7H55-M SI motherboard with the built-in audio chipset VIA VT1708S. Under openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7 (64-bit) I have no sound although the audio chipset seems to be properly recognised by the OS. After booting, I use the alsamixer application and I set the volume for all channels, including PCM, to their maximum value but still I get no sound. When the OS boots I hear a "click" sound coming from the audio chipset when it is initialised by the kernel but then the sound stops and I hear nothing. Note that I DO NOT have this problem with: Ubuntu 10.04 openSUSE 11.2 Fedora 12 but I have the exact same issue with: Fedora 13 My guess is that Fedora 13 and openSUSE 11.3m7, having newer kernel/alsa software versions, exhibit this problem due to some bug introduced to the code. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7 2. Login 3. Try to play any audio file Actual Results: No sound from either the left/right speakers connected to the left/right line out connectors of the audio card or the headphones from the headphone jack. Expected Results: Expected to hear sound. The results of the alsa-info.sh command can be seen in the following file: http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AQE70_VEFPVHZGhkeDZ3MnpfMTI1N202NHJkbg&hl=en while the output of the dmesg command can be seen in the following file: http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AQE70_VEFPVHZGhkeDZ3MnpfMTNyd3RxdmpmbQ&hl=en I also executed the speaker-test and aplay programs with various options in order to generate sound with no success. Finally, I disabled PulseAudio and attempted to play some audio files but again there was no sound. NOTE 1: I noticed that after the first boot, if I execute YaST in order to see the configuration of my audio card, YaST displays the audio card as: 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio and reports that it is not configured. I then select the Edit option and perform an automatic configuration/initialisation. During this operation I hear a "click" sound when the sound system is restarted and then silence. NOTE 2: When I execute the alsamixer application on a terminal, I am presented with the configuration of Pulse Audio. I then have to press F6 to select another card and the menu shows two options: - (default) 0 HDA Intel When I select "0 HDA Intel" then I can set the volume level for the audio card channels. However, on Ubuntu 10.04 (where my audio card works properly) when I execute alsamixer I only see the HDA Intel sound card and not the PulseAudio card. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I updated package alsa-driver-kmp-desktop from the openSUSE Build Service Multimedia:Audio:KMP repository and then rebooted the computer. The results are the following:
1. I have sound from the audio jack on the back of the computer, intended for use with external speakers.
2. I do not have sound from the headphone jack on the front face of the computer. Running alsamixer I tried the option to set "Independent Headphones" ON and OFF but neither setting made any difference.
I am running OpenSuSE 11.3 on an ASUS P5QL/EPU system and I have the same issue with sound. I haven't yet tried the rear jacks though, only the front headphone jack and the SPDIF connection. (In reply to comment #0)

I guess the problem is that the wrong pin is wired, or the BIOS is broken to give the wrong pin information.
You can check which pin corresponds to which jack by checking the pin-detection HD-audio codec verb via hda-verb program. Study HD-audio codec spec, and use hda-verb program to issue the pin-sense verb to each pin widget NID.
Under Windows 7 the audio works perfectly, both analog and digital. If the BIOS is broken or the wrong pin wired how come the audio works correctly under Windows as well as under Ubuntu 10.04? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
