[Bug 568305] New: ALSA - Microphone jack not working on a HP Compaq dx220 MicroTower with snd-hda-intel, HDA ATI SB, ALC861-D Analog
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=568305 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=568305#c0 Summary: ALSA - Microphone jack not working on a HP Compaq dx220 MicroTower with snd-hda-intel, HDA ATI SB, ALC861-D Analog Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: rkrell@gmx.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20091222 SUSE/3.5.7-2.4 Firefox/3.5.7 On the given system, if I leave the default system sound settings (I guess model=auto), I get no microphone working on both, the rear and the front jack. I tried several settings in kmix, with and without capturing and mic and front mic boost, no chance. Primarily I intend to use the mic from a headphone with Skype 2.1, but even for instance KDE3 krecord did not detect any signal level. I don't have installed or activated PulseAudio I ended up with choosing the driver model "3stack" explicitely from the YaST Sound module. This gives me at least krecord to detect a significant signal level change on speaking into the front mic, but I can't for instance still hear myself although I unmute all output channels in kmix and Skype doesn't still work and hangs up now after trying a call. The BIOS settings don't offer many possibilities with sound settings, there is only a switch whether to use Intel HDA Audio or not. Meanwhile, no automatic change of the model looking at dmesg, assuming still being "3stack". The option "hp" resulted in less controls and channels, and no working mic, also. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But I can't hear myself during that while speaking into the mic in any speaker or the headset iteself whatever I adjust or uncheck in kmix, anyway. Furthermore, starting Skype seems to "steal" the mic from krecord immediately (using Skype's 2.1 mic input device "Default Device"). I have still no idea what's going on here. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"auto" doesn't work good, less controls and channels, not dividing into mic and front mic for my box (HP Compaq dx220 MicroTower). Now using alsamixer instead of kmix. In alsamixer, there are more controls visible for capture devices than in kmix. For example, there can be chosen, which jack can be captured as Input Source: "Mic" (default), "Front Mic", "Line", "CD". I guess I have to capture "Front Mic" in my case, did so and adjusted the capure level, front mic level and boost to some levels above 0. May be this is one of the problems not capturing the front mic. Will investigate more... -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=568305 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=568305#c4 --- Comment #4 from René Krell <rkrell@gmx.net> 2010-01-05 16:15:45 UTC --- After restarting the computer, using "3stack" finally capturing from the front mic works also in Skype. Thus, there seem to be two problems for the given computer/board/chipset: 1. The driver option model has to be changed to "3stack". 2. The "Input Source" chooser isn't visible in kmix, anyway, and there is chosen the default "Mic" (which is probably the rear jack for the mic). This setting can be only changed in alsamixer. Let me know if I should report it separately as a kmix-specific problem. Isn't it possible to add a quirk for that board to offer the correct default sound settings? One more weird thing: In alsamixer, there are now two "Mic Boost" controls, which follow each other when changing it.
I restarted again, with switching my box off. Immediately after restart I opened alsamixer, chose the input devices (F4) and there was the right number and kind of input devices as expected (I guess 4, no left and right channels). I closed alsamixer by <esc>. After a while I reopened the alsamixer and there was a different number of input devices, for instance again two "Front Mic Boost" and two "Mic Boost". Well maybe the two controls of the same kind are for stereo mics (left and right channel), but why are they changing within a user session after a while? Nevertheless, KMix still doesn't show the input device selector.
