/opt/kde3/bin/kdesu /opt/kde3/bin/konsole works as always.
Interestingly
kdesu /opt/kde3/bin/konsole has simply no effect.

Or you did "su -" and so cleared DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS. But this would be affect starting KDE 4 apps without doing a hal upgrade. Can you confirm how you started your root kde4-konsole?
