[Bug 486710] New: No clean shutdown after update to sysvinit 2.86-186.16.1-i58
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=486710 Summary: No clean shutdown after update to sysvinit 2.86-186.16.1-i58 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: nospam@tils.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.4pre) Gecko/2008101311 Firefox/3.0.4pre (Swiftfox) After an update to sysvinit 2.86-186.16.1-i58 my system stopped to shutdown in a clean state. It stopped with a message like: /etc/init.d/rc in line 317 killproc.... $link status (Sorry I don't know it exactly) Then after a reboot the filesystem was not clean. There had so many transactions to be rolled back that I think its stops in runlevel 3. This problem only appears on my main desktop computer. I have a netbook which does not show the problem. After downgrading to sysvinit 2.86-186.7-i586 the problem is gone. (The downgrade also downgraded aaa_base to 11.1-10007.14.1-i586 so I don't know exactly by which rpm the error was produced) Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I tested it and the described error returned. Here is the complete output: Sending all processes the TERM signal... /etc/init.d/rc: line 317: 8037 Killed $link start ...done Master Resource Control: runlevel 6 has been INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel ...reached So this is the same error as before. The changelog of sysvinit in yast showed the following entry: startpar: fix file descriptor leak (bnc#485112) so I thought that this perhaps will fix my errors but the error remains the same. I'll switch back to 2.86.186.7-i586... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I installed the new aaa_base and sysvinit packages and the patched mkill file but the same error occured. I have to say two things: I am running a selfcompiled kernel. Then I installed the kernel of jengelh (2.6.29 rt) but the problem occured with both kernels. (2 Days ago I did install the aaa_base from jengelh and the problem didn't occur, but yesterday after an update of jengelh's aaa_base it needed to update sysvinit and the problem reoccured) Another potential problem perhaps is: I have no working swap partition, don't know why but i cannot create one (tried everything from yast to swapon/off...). I have nested mountpoints (but I think you know that from my /proc/mounts output). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To debug a possible problem with mkill in /etc/init.d/boot.localfs please add the two lines mkill -0 $ulist | xargs -r ps u mkill -0 $ulist | xargs -n 1 -r | while read p; do ls -Gl /proc/$p/fd; done sleep 10 before the line mkill -TERM $ulist in /etc/init.d/boot.localfs ... After this we may see which process will be terminated and may cause a hang. You may see the messages within /var/log/boot.omsg on next boot. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
