[Bug 262966] New: NetworkManager default for WEP should be ASCII instead of passphrase
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262966 Summary: NetworkManager default for WEP should be ASCII instead of passphrase Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: danielstefanmader@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de I do not know of any wireless router that uses WEP/passphrase.. The less experienced user will take what it offers for WEP encryption which is with an ASCII password. It is confusing for almost every new user that there is any possible choice at all (WEP != WEP) so that I think we should make it easier by defaulting to what 99% of WEP-"secured" networks use. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

A lot of modems ship with a hex passphrase. Harder to fix that, I guess. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's not possible to choose the right WEP format automatically. The NetworkManager maintainer claims the most often used format is already used and I have no reason to doubt in his experience: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/networkmanager-list/2008-July/msg00066.html I'm going to mark this bug as INVALID, if you disagree, please send a mail to the networkmanager mailing list. It's not a bug and works as designed. Whether that design is invalid, is up to you to prove. :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
