After getting into the mentioned problem on OpenSUSE 11.1 I tried to make PulseAudio my preferred device using the Xine backend and from what I remember the problem did no longer occur. Could you check it? Also, kmix itself could play a role since it saves/restores the volume by itself. So, check the behavior several times by login/logoff sessions. I don't remember where I see such reports about PA. But PulseAudio is always coming up with each KDE4 session (I wonder why in this case). I use the ALSA device as a preferred device in Phonon - Intel ICH5 with ALC 655, on the x86 system. Thus, Phonon should not go over PulseAudio to ALSA, I hope so. But the muting problem is still there. I will try it a longer time, but at the moment I have no idea which component affects this. The muting came definitelz from PulseAudio, I removed it temporarily for now. FYI, at the moment I am at OpenSUSE 11.2 M5 (but this doesn't matter, the problem occurs there in the same manner as in OpenSUSE 11.1). Here are the results: At first, I got the same result as it was told in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=499445#c26 (comment 26).
