The problem is fixed by rebooting. I have tried booting from a previous snapper snapshot using the latest Kernel 6.6.x but that did not solve the problem. A reboot does usually solve the problem, although once I had to explicitly shut down and then power on the laptop. The specific problem reported in the kernel log seems to be.
