This is done to support Plasma 4 -> Plasma 5 upgrade path. Unfortunately, i don't see another way to do this.
Can't we just replace /usr/share/xsessions/kde-plasma.desktop with /usr/share/xsessions/plasma5.desktop during upgrade? I am pretty sure other distros done that before. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then the user would get a nice error from DM he uses about non-existing kde-plasma.desktop.
